Placek, Robert W. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1980
Discusses the importance of the design structure of total programs in computer assisted music instruction and presents a model for integrating computer assisted instruction materials into the music curriculum. Listed are objectives and their relevant behaviors for use in a CAI course of study in music education. (Author)
Descriptors: Behavioral Objectives, Computer Assisted Instruction, Curriculum Development, Models
Bregar, William S.; Farley, Arthur M. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1980
Explores how new, operational models of cognition processing developed in Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be applied in computer assisted instruction (CAI) systems. CAI systems are surveyed in terms of their goals and formalisms, and a model for the development of a tutorial CAI system for algebra problem solving is introduced. (Author)

Avner, Allen; And Others – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1980
Seven hundred university students in a chemistry laboratory course received computer based instruction (CBI) in one of two forms, "interactive" or "passive." Laboratory performance was significantly better for students who used the "interactive" form. (Author/MER)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Comparative Analysis, Computer Assisted Instruction, Higher Education
Wedman, John F. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1987
This study examined indirect communication patterns among professionals in the computer-based instruction field by analyzing citations from the Journal of Computer-Based Instruction. The patterns found provide the basis for identifying invisible colleges, defined here as communication networks that facilitate the diffusion of knowledge and direct…

Lahey, George F. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1981
Studied the performance of the U.S. Navy trainees on three computer-based lessons under programed control in order to determine whether variations in the sequence of instructional presentation improved learning. Sixteen references are cited. (FM)

The Effects of Computer-Assisted Aural Drill Time on Achievement in Musical Interval Identification.
Humphries, James A. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1980
Reports a study to determine the relationship between computer assisted aural drill time and achievement in musical interval identification, to determine the effect of computer assisted aural drill on attitude toward the study of aural music theory, and to determine the effect of previous keyboard experience on achievement. (RAO)
Descriptors: Auditory Training, Aural Learning, Computer Assisted Instruction, Higher Education
Dennis, Verl E. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1979
Investigates the influence of display rate and viewing field on student-machine interaction in CAI. It was shown that these variables exert an influence upon the student's interaction with a tutorial CAI program and that planners should be aware of this interaction. (RAO)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Display Systems, Man Machine Systems, Screens (Displays)
Berkowitz, Melissa S.; Szabo, Michael – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1979
Problem solving performance of individuals was compared with that of dyads at three levels of mental ability using a computer-based inquiry into the riddle of the frozen Wooly Mammoth. Results indicated significant interactions between grouping and mental ability for certain problem solving internal measures. (RAO)
Descriptors: College Students, Computer Assisted Instruction, Individual Instruction, Intelligence
Rubincam, Irvin – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1987
Examines characteristics of 50 frequently cited authors in the field of computer applications to education (CAE). Citation analysis used in the study is discussed, a taxonomy of topics in CAE based upon the writings of these authors is developed, and a comparison is made with data from the Social Science Citation Index. (LRW)
Descriptors: Citation Analysis, Citations (References), Classification, Comparative Analysis
Forsythe, Alan B.; Freed, James R. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1979
Evaluates the effectiveness of computer assisted instruction for teaching biostatistics to first year students at the UCLA School of Dentistry. Results do not demonstrate the superiority of CAI but do suggest that CAI compares favorably to conventional lecture and programed instruction methods. (RAO)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Dental Schools, Dentistry, Educational Research
Arenson, Michael A. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1978
A questionnaire, sent to each of the 139 members of the National Consortium for Computer-Based Music Instruction identifying the systems, terminals, and peripheral equipment available to them and discussing their future hardware needs, is reviewed. (RAO)
Descriptors: Audio Equipment, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computers, Equipment Utilization
Gaynor, Patricia – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1981
Investigates the effect of feedback delay in computer-assisted instruction on short- and long-term retention of mathematical material, by college students. Difficulty level of material and original learning are also considered. Results show that a delay in feedback may have a detrimental effect on retention. (Author/JJD)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Difficulty Level, Feedback, Higher Education
Montanelli, Richard G., Jr. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1979
Compares PLATO and non-PLATO student performance in an introductory computer programing course at the University of Illinois. Results indicate that PLATO students would recommend PLATO to friends, that the drop rate was higher for PLATO students than for non-PLATO, but that performance was equal for both groups. (RAO)
Descriptors: College Students, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Science Education, Educational Research
Vernon, Robert F. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1993
Discussion of complimentary computer software for college-level textbooks focuses on a study that investigated how a complimentary program was used and identified factors that influenced its use or nonuse. Barriers to use are described, including personal, technical, process, political, and economic factors. (Contains four references.) (LRW)

Kearsley, Greg – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1988
Describes attempts to validate the expert system, CBT Analyst, which is designed to help training managers make decisions about computer-based training (CBT). Conclusions reached by CBT experts on case studies for five decision areas are compared with those of the expert system, and internal and external validity are discussed. (Author/LRW)
