Rich, Kathryn M.; Yadov, Aman; Zhu, Marissa – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 2019
Moving among levels of abstraction is an important skill in mathematics and computer science, and students show similar difficulties when applying abstraction in each discipline. While computer science educators have examined ways to explicitly teach students how to consciously navigate levels of abstraction, these ideas have not been explored in…

Teleky, Heidi Ann; And Others – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1993
Addresses why the authors feel it is not inappropriate to teach about viruses in the how-to, hands-on fashion. Identifies the special features of Turbo Pascal that have to be used for the creation of an effective virus. Defines virus, derives its structure, and from this structure is derived the implemented virus. (PR)

Proskurowski, Wlodzimierz – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1981
An experimental program in Calculus I at the University of Southern California (USC) is described. It is concluded that it is possible to give a meaningful program in which computer use is incorporated. The intent is to set up all USC calculus courses with some use of microcomputers. (MP)

Stephens, Larry J. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1984
Correlations derived from this study indicate that undergraduate students' (N=24) and graduate students' (N=18) performance in statistical methods is not strongly influenced by their aptitude in computer science. One implication is that no computer science prerequisite is necessary for courses utilizing statistical packages. (JN)

Brazier, Gerald; Watkins, Will – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1986
Points out the benefits of students using LOGO with problems dealing with vectors and matrices. Provides examples of performing linear algebraic computations in LOGO. (ML)
Descriptors: Algebra, Computer Science Education, Computer Uses in Education, Mathematical Applications

Kost, Franklin – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1988
Presents a program written in USCD Pascal that simulates a system routine. Illustrates standard and user defined boolean and string functions and string procedures. Details the processing operations. (CW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Science, Computer Uses in Education, Courseware

Baird, William E. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1985
The Association of Educational Data Systems (AEDS) conference included 102 presentations. Abstracts of seven of these presentations are provided. Topic areas considered include LOGO, teaching probability through a computer game, writing effective computer assisted instructional materials, computer literacy, research on instructional…

Dreyfus, Tommy – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1988
Proposes to modify the procedure proposed by Abelson and diSessa to produce a polygonal path with vertices that lie exactly on an ellipse. Provides a detailed proof. Implements a limiting process to produce the best possible approximation to any ellipse for any given screen resolution. (CW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics, Computer Science, Computer Uses in Education

Winner, Alice-Ann; Holloway, Robert E. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1983
Cites need for properly integrating computers into curriculum, warning about past mistakes and looking at methods to promote curricular change. Identifies as important goals a clear definition of mathematics education and the benefits of a technologically integrated curriculum presenting ideas/strategies for achieving these goals. (JM)

Walton, Karen Doyle, Comp. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1986
Provides an annotated list of references for educators on using computers in the classroom and for researchers in gathering background materials for the preparation of articles, grant proposals, and presentations. Focuses specifically on probability and computers. (ML)
Descriptors: Annotated Bibliographies, Computer Science Education, Computer Uses in Education, Instructional Improvement

Scanlan, David; Clark, Leisa – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
Studies whether students' stated preferences for flowcharts or pseudocodes match their actual behaviors. Provides a review of the literature on flowchart utility. Reports that students preferred flowcharts to pseudocodes. Lists an example of both a flowchart and pseudocode. (MVL)
