Thompson, H. Bradford – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1985
Presents a collection of short items, including: (1) a routine to watch while computer processing occurs; (2) a MSBASIC-to-WORDSTAR translator; (3) an easy by-column printout; and (4) a selection of one-line functions, such as automatic string centering. (JN)
Descriptors: Computer Science, Computer Science Education, Computer Software, Higher Education

Thompson, H. Bradford – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1983
This column is designed to share BASIC sub-programs and to show how subroutines and function subprograms may be used to simplify and organize BASIC programing. The yes-no function is defined and programs presented, followed by the multiple-branch function and adding a HELP feature. (MNS)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Computer Science, Functions (Mathematics), Instruction

Estes, Yvonne – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1984
Discusses the nature and uses of LOGO programing language with primary children. Sample program listings and the results obtained by primary children are included. (JN)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Computer Software, Primary Education, Programing

Mandell, Alan; Lucking, Robert – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1988
Discusses artificial intelligence, its definitions, and potential applications. Provides listings of Logo and BASIC versions for programs along with REM statements needed to make modifications for use with Apple computers. (RT)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Literacy, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Science

Estes, Yvonne, Ed. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1985
Iteration is the process of doing something repeatedly in a computer program. In LOGO, the most elementary form of iteration is provided by the REPEAT command. This paper explores how programers can use LOGO's extensibility to create more powerful iterative forms than those offered by the REPEAT command. (JN)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Computer Software, Elementary Secondary Education, Mathematics Education

Woodrow, Janice E. J. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1987
Reports on a study designed to investigate the attitudes of practicing teachers and student teachers regarding the educational use of computers. Results indicated that both groups of teachers surveyed believed their students should be computer literate and advocated the increased use of computers in education. (TW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Literacy, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Science

Kugel, Peter – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1985
The nature of thinking is the subject of this second part in a series which is examining various topics and issues related to the controversy of whether or not computers can think. Suggests that intelligence is the ability to develop general ideas and not the ability to apply those ideas. (JN)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computers, Higher Education

Lough, Tom; Tipps, Steve – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1986
Describes various solutions to sequence problems using Logo programing language. Complete program listings are included when applicable. (JN)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Mathematics Education

Lough, Tom; Tipps, Steve – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1985
LOGO tools are procedures which accomplish specific tasks. They can be furnished to students, along with suggestions for exploratory activities, or students can develop them. Several of these tools (program listings) with sample output are presented. (JN)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Elementary Secondary Education, Mathematics Education, Programing

Smith, Richard L. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1986
Annotates reference material on artificial intelligence, mostly at an introductory level, with applications to education and learning. Topics include: (1) programing languages; (2) expert systems; (3) language instruction; (4) tutoring systems; and (5) problem solving and reasoning. (JM)
Descriptors: Abstracts, Annotated Bibliographies, Artificial Intelligence, College Science

Ford, Marilyn Sue; And Others – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1982
A computer curriculum including literacy and programing skills is viewed as an example of a program which can easily provide both acceleration of the rate of learning and enrichment through development of higher-level thinking skills. A program used with fifth through eighth grade children in Tempe, Arizona is described. (MP)
Descriptors: Academically Gifted, Computer Science Education, Computers, Elementary Secondary Education

Gamble, Andy – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1982
Discusses a short computer program used in teaching the random (RND) function in the BASIC programming language. Focuses on the mathematical concepts involved in the program related to elementary probability. (JN)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Computer Programs, Computer Science Education, High Schools

Enochs, Larry G. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1984
Examined effects of beginning computer programing instruction, sex, and home computers on the attitudes of fifth-grade students (N=49). Results of this pilot study showed higher attitudes following instruction and no differences between the sexes or between those who had computers and those who did not. (JN)
Descriptors: Attitude Change, Computer Science Education, Educational Research, Elementary School Students

Hayek, Linda M.; Stephens, Larry – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
Examines factors related to computer anxiety measured by the Computer Anxiety Index (CAIN). Achievement in two programing courses was inversely related to computer anxiety. Students who had a home computer and had computer experience before high school had lower computer anxiety than those who had not. Lists 14 references. (YP)
Descriptors: Computer Literacy, Computer Science Education, Computer Uses in Education, Mathematics Achievement

Baird, William E. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1984
Describes a two-semester computer science course, outlining course objectives and discussing classroom management techniques, software used, and courseware developed. Also includes table of contents for student manuals, and comments indicating that the course is meeting its objectives. (JN)
Descriptors: Classroom Techniques, Computer Graphics, Computer Programs, Computer Science Education
