Examines the relation of depression to locus of control and to the perceived causes of depression in a nonpsychiatric population. Findings suggest that adolescent females tend to hold themselves more responsible than males for unsatisfactory personal situations, and this extends to the attribution of causes for unhappy moods. Compared the social cognitive styles of abused children with a control sample and found differences in perceived locus of control of social events and social role comprehensions. Using a multidimensional locus of control scale, scores of female anorexia nervosa patients (N=54) were compared to norms. Younger anorexic patients demonstrated higher internal control compared to norms on times related to fatalism and social-system control.
