The practice of gatekeeping within the profession of counseling is well documented in the literature. Counselor educators are charged with the responsibility of serving as gatekeepers for the profession. However, a number of factors inhibit the practice of gatekeeping, including fears of retribution, loss, or damage. At the same time, failure to address student concerns contributes to damaging consequences to the profession and to the clients it serves. This manuscript addresses some experiences faced by counselor educators following their participation in a gatekeeping process and describes one method used by faculty to put words to name and creatively come to terms with their experiences.
