Greene, Jeffrey Alan; Torney-Purta, Judith; Azevedo, Roger – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2010
Models of personal epistemology have not been sufficiently integrated despite conceptual similarities. We attempted to model both dimensional and positional aspects of personal epistemology, as well as examine the domain specificity of these phenomena. The conceptual framework for this study was a new model of epistemic and ontological cognitive…

Are SSATs and GPA Enough? A Theory-Based Approach to Predicting Academic Success in Secondary School
Grigorenko, Elena L.; Jarvin, Linda; Diffley, Ray; Goodyear, Julie; Shanahan, Edward J.; Sternberg, Robert J. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2009
Two studies were carried out to predict academic success in the highly competitive environment of a private preparatory school, Choate Rosemary Hall. The 1st study focused on the question of whether there are indicators beyond middle school grade-point average (GPA) and standardized test scores that might enhance the validity of measures for…

Green, Christa L.; Walker, Joan M. T.; Hoover-Dempsey, Kathleen V.; Sandler, Howard M. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2007
This study examined the ability of a theoretical model to predict types and levels of parental involvement during the elementary and middle school years. Predictor variables included parents' motivational beliefs about involvement, perceptions of invitations to involvement from others, and perceived life context variables. Analyses of responses…

Marsh, Herbert W.; Yeung, Alexander Seeshing – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1997
Reanalysis of the factor analysis of S. Simpson, B. Licht, R. Wagner, and S. Stader (1996) of children's responses to four ability-related self-perceptions shows how applying a construct validity approach leads to conclusions opposed to theirs but still consistent with previous theory and research on academic self-concept. (SLD)

Licht, Barbara G.; Wagner, Richard K.; Simpson, Sharon M.; Stader, Sandra R. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1997
H. Marsh and A. Yeung have criticized the conclusions of the present authors with regard to academic self-concept as inconsistent with previous research. It is argued that this inconsistency is because items on the academic self-concept scales are not adequate for answering questions about children's differentiation of perceived ability and…

Watkins, Marley W.; Coffey, Debra Young – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2004
The Motivations for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) contains 54 items that are posited to tap 11 dimensions of reading motivation. The structural validity of the MRQ was investigated with 2 samples: (a) 328 students in Grades 3-5 from 2 suburban mid-Atlantic elementary schools and (b) 735 students in Grades 3-5 in 2 suburban southwestern elementary…

Branum-Martin, Lee; Mehta, Paras D.; Fletcher, Jack M.; Carlson, Coleen D.; Ortiz, Alba; Carlo, Maria; Francis, David J. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2006
The construct validity of English and Spanish phonological awareness (PA) tasks was examined with a sample of 812 kindergarten children from 71 transitional bilingual education program classrooms located in 3 different types of geographic regions in California and Texas. Tasks of PA, including blending nonwords, segmenting words, and phoneme…

Marsh, Herbert W. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1994
Self-concept scales from the Australian Self Description Questionnaire II (SDQII) were included in the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88). Mean differences based on 17,544 U.S. responses and the Australian normative sample were small. Results support construct validity of SDQII responses in NELS:88 data. (SLD)

Rest, James; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1997
The Defining Issues Test (DIT) of moral judgment, a stage preference approach, is compared with the Moral Judgment Test (MJT) widely used in Europe. The MJT is a stage consistency test. Construct validity is defined in terms of seven types of studies, which support use of the stage preference approach. (SLD)

Malofeeva, Elena; Day, Jeanne; Saco, Ximena; Young, Laura; Ciancio, Dennis – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2004
The reliability and, to a lesser extent, the validity of the newly created Number Sense Test was evaluated with a group of 40 3- to 5-year-old children attending Head Start. Six number sense skills (e.g., counting, number identification, addition-subtraction) and children's feelings about school were assessed both before and after instruction…

Cho, Kwangsu; Schunn, Christian D.; Wilson, Roy W. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2006
Although peer reviewing of writing is a way to create more writing opportunities in college and university settings, the validity and reliability of peer-generated grades are a major concern. This study investigated the validity and reliability of peer-generated writing grades of 708 students across sixteen different courses from four universities…

Abrami, Philip C.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1990
Primary research on student ratings of instruction is reviewed, and questions about the validity of such ratings as measures of teacher effectiveness are explored using nomological coding of 43 validity studies to examine causes of variability in coefficients of validity. Deficiencies of prior analyses and research needs are identified. (SLD)
