Lehr, Jay H.; Pettyjohn, Wayne A. – Journal of Environmental Health, 1976
Examined are the physical characteristics of ground water movement. Some potential pollution problems are identified. Models are used to explain mathematical and hydraulic principles of flow toward a pumping well and an effluent stream, flow around and through lenticular beds, and effects of pumping on the water table. Newill, Vaun A. – Journal of Environmental Health, 1974
Background concerning legislation and development of environmental programs is detailed in the areas of air pollution, water pollution, pesticides, and multimedia toxic substances. Each section contains a discussion of scientific knowledge, health effects, costs, proposed standards, and possible approaches to the problems. (LS)

Calabrese, Edward J.; Tuthill, Robert W. – Journal of Environmental Health, 1978
Sodium enters drinking water by a variety of human activities and by natural means. Evidence suggests elevated levels of sodium in drinking water may adversely affect health. Action should be taken to reduce the level of human exposure to sodium in drinking water. (RE)

Mabbett, Arthur N. – Journal of Environmental Health, 1975
In 1972, a water quality survey of the eastern end of Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands was conducted to determine the water quality of selected lagoon and open ocean sites and provide guidance for the construction of a sewerage system. This study revealed that lagoon waters were moderately to severely contaminated. (BT)

Shiomoto, Gail T.; Olson, Betty H. – Journal of Environmental Health, 1978
Conventional and nuclear power plants release waste heat to cooling water which then returns to receiving bodies of surface water. This thermal pollution causes a variety of effects in the aquatic ecosystem. More must be learned about these effects to ensure adequate regulation of thermal discharges. (RE)

Varma, M. M.; And Others – Journal of Environmental Health, 1976
The physiological effects on humans and animals of trace amounts of organic and unorganic pollutants in natural and waste waters are examined. The sensitivity of particular organs and species is emphasized. Substances reviewed include mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead, chromium, fluorides, nitrates and organics, including polychlounated biphenyls.…

Boatright, D. T.; Lawrence, C. H. – Journal of Environmental Health, 1977
The technical and economic feasibility of constructing and operating a rapid sand filtration sewage treatment system as an adjunct to a waste water stabilization pond is investigated. The study concludes that such units are within the technical and economic constraints of a small community and comply with the EPA criteria. (BT)

Journal of Environmental Health, 1981
Presents the sixth and final lesson on general environmental health, appearing since January, 1977 in this journal. Twenty-five multiple choice questions appear dealing with environmental health topics such as food sanitation, milk sanitation, vector control, public health housing, institutional environmental health, waste disposal, air pollution,…

Cooper, Robert C. – Journal of Environmental Health, 1975
The ability of various treatment processes, such as oxidation ponds, chemical coagulation and filtration, and the soil mantle, to remove the agents of infectious disease found in waste water is discussed. The literature concerning the efficiency of removal of these organisms by various treatment processes is reviewed. (BT)

Calabrese, Edward J.; Tuthill, Robert W. – Journal of Environmental Health, 1977
Discusses the contamination of drinking water supplies from highway salt applications. The toxicological and epidemiological literature indicates, at present, only that sodium in the diet is a factor in hypertension and general human ill-health. (MR)
