Supporting First-Year Seminar Faculty through Assets-Based Communities of Practice
Smith, Tessa; Barrett, Claire
Journal of Faculty Development, v33 n3 p19-24 Sep 2019
"The Wisconsin Experience Seminar" is an extended-orientation style first-year seminar (FYS) that is intended to support students' transitions to college. The course is held each academic semester at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is taught by instructors in a variety professional roles at the university. The program is housed in the Center for the First-Year Experience, where the course designers incorporated a student-centered, assets-based pedagogical orientation into the design of the training and ongoing professional development for The Wisconsin Experience Seminar instructors and undergraduate peer mentors. These faculty development efforts were informed by backward design, active learning pedagogy, and Canvas as the Learning Management System used to centralize resources.
