Gonzalez, Libertad; Ozcan, Berkay – Journal of Human Resources, 2013
We analyze the causal impact of an increase in the risk of marital dissolution on the saving behavior of married couples. We use the legalization of divorce in Ireland in 1996 as an exogenous shock to the risk of divorce. We propose several comparison groups (unaffected by the law change) that allow us to use a difference-in-differences approach.…

Leon, Gianmarco – Journal of Human Resources, 2012
This paper provides empirical evidence of the persistent effect of exposure to political violence on human capital accumulation. I exploit the variation in conflict location and birth cohorts to identify the long- and short-term effects of the civil war on educational attainment. Conditional on being exposed to violence, the average person…

Rees, Daniel I.; Sabia, Joseph J. – Journal of Human Resources, 2011
Despite the fact that migraine headaches are common and debilitating, little is known about their effect on educational attainment. Using data drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, we estimate the relationship between migraine headache and three outcomes: high school grade point average, the probability of graduating…

Hnatkovska, Viktoria; Lahiri, Amartya; Paul, Sourabh B. – Journal of Human Resources, 2013
We contrast the intergenerational mobility rates of the historically
disadvantaged scheduled castes and tribes (SC/ST) in India with the rest of
the workforce in terms of their education attainment, occupation choices and
wages. Using survey data from successive rounds of the National Sample
Survey between 1983 and 2005, we find that…

Frazis, Harley; Stewart, Jay – Journal of Human Resources, 1999
Because the Current Population Survey changed its educational attainment questions in 1992, this paper presents a method for adjusting earnings at different educational levels to make pre- and post-1992 data comparable. The adjustments reduce the estimated growth in college/high school earnings ratios between 1989 and 1993. (Author/SK)

Black, Dan A.; Haviland, Amelia M.; Sanders, Seth G.; Taylor, Lowell J. – Journal of Human Resources, 2008
We examine gender wage disparities for four groups of college-educated women--black, Hispanic, Asian, and non-Hispanic white--using the National Survey of College Graduates. Raw log wage gaps, relative to non-Hispanic white male counterparts, generally exceed -0.30. Estimated gaps decline to between -0.08 and -0.19 in nonparametric analyses that…

Couch, Kenneth A.; Dunn, Thomas A. – Journal of Human Resources, 1997
Comparison of U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics and German Socioeconomic Panel data found similarities in correlation of earnings and working hours for fathers and sons. Correlation for daughters and mothers was stronger in the United States, where more women are in the labor force. Intergenerational correlations in educational attainment were…
