Taylor, Nancy E. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1980
Focusing primarily on learning disabled children, the article briefly reviews the literature related to perceptual skills required in reading acquisition and the validity of current perceptual measures to tap these task-related perceptual abilities, and proposes an informal task-related measure to overcome the drawbacks of more formal measures of…

Miller, Maurice; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1978
In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) in discriminating auditory or visual deficits, 121 learning disabled children (mean age 100 months) were tested. (PHR)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Classification, Evaluation, Intelligence Tests

Tryjankowski, Elaine M. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1987
The study evaluated the construct validity of five perceptual traits with simulated work samples from the Jewish Vocational Service Work Sample System. Results with 36 learning disabled adolescents indicated that simulated work samples can be used as a diagnostic instrument for assessment of perceptual abilities in a vocational setting. (Author/DB)

Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Elementary Education, Exceptional Child Research, Identification

Zach, Lillian; Kaufman, Judith – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1972
Performances on the Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test and on a visual discrimination task using the same forms were found not to be related. Implication for identification of perceptual deficiencies and subsequent perceptual training are discussed. (KW)
Descriptors: Diagnostic Tests, Exceptional Child Research, Identification, Learning Disabilities

Smith, Philip A.; Marx, Ronald W. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1972
Evaluation of the Frostig Developmental Test of Visual Perception found that it measured a single general factor of perceptual organization which was weakly related to IQ and unrelated to reading ability. (KW)
Descriptors: Diagnostic Tests, Exceptional Child Research, Factor Analysis, Identification

Rosner, Jerome; Simon, Dorothea P. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1971
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Phonics, Test Construction, Test Validity

Ritter, David R.; Ysseldyke, James E. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1976
Investigated with 64 upper middle class first-grade children of normal intelligence and visual perception was the construct validity of the trait of visual figure-ground perception. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Exceptional Child Research, General Education, Primary Education, Statistical Analysis

McCarthy, James J.; Larsen, Stephen C. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1976
Presented are a rebuttal and a counter-rebuttal to an earlier article questioning the educational usefulness of perceptual tests with learning disabled children. (DB)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Exceptional Child Research, Learning Disabilities, Perception Tests

Elenbogen, Elaine Manheim; Thompson, Glen Robbins – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1972
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Auditory Tests, Disadvantaged Youth, Exceptional Child Research

Van Camp, Sarah S. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1980
To better identify the auditory strengths of elementary school children, a test was developed using a pure tone approach with sets of signals. (SBH)

Cornoldi, Cesare; Venneri, Annalena; Marconato, Fabio; Molin, Adriana; Montinari, Cinzia – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2003
An 18-item "Shortened Visuospatial Questionnaire" (SVS) was validated twice, first by verifying that children (ages 8-13) identified with the SVS questionnaire as having visuospatial learning disability (VSLD) (n=54) actually showed visuospatial deficits on psychometric evaluation, and second, by rating with the SVS a clinically identified…

Fletcher, Jack M.; Satz, Paul – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1979
The paper evaluates the empirical and theoretical basis upon which several recent studies reject the hypothesis of a visual-perceptual deficit in reading disabilities. (Author)
Descriptors: Definitions, Etiology, Exceptional Child Research, Hypothesis Testing

Gross, Karen; Rothenberg, Stephen – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1979
Two methodological problems often arising in dyslexia research are considered. The first problem concerns the validity of experimental measures and the related problem of interpreting null results. The second problem involves the effects of sampling from a disabled population if the disorder under investigation has multiple unknown origins.…

Clark, Charles M.; Dodd, Byron E. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1971
The paper suggests that the use of a single visual-motor test, (here, the Winter Haven Perceptual Forms Test) as a screening device for visual-motor difficulties in the first grade is questionable. (Author)
