Reports the results of a survey of academic library circulation managers to identify the degree of circulation automation and to discover their attitudes toward the circulation role, service issues, and user demands. The survey found a depressed state of circulation development and support in ARL libraries. (RAA)

Provides statistical data from MARC-II bibliographic files to be used in the design of a nationwide authority file. The data include information on characteristics of headings and on expected sizes and growth rates of various authority file subsets. Cost analysis of an automated network system and a manual system of cataloging and book processing indicates a 20 percent savings using automation. Per unit costs based on the average monthly automation rate are used for comparison. Higher manual system costs are attributed to staff costs. (RAA)
