An inventory with five subscales was developed to identify major kinds of coping used in dealing with recurring marital problems, based on 368 subjects. Greek families were analyzed in terms of resources available to husband and wife. An important resource was the amount of spouse's love. The more husbands loved wives, and the less wives loved husbands, the more power was shared. Power sharing was not common when both spouses were college educated. (NG)

Examined effects of household structure on labor force status of female heads of families with minor children using the March 1985 Current Population Survey. Results suggest that models of labor force behavior are misspecified if female heads of families are not analyzed separately by race and marital status. (Author/ABL)

A typology of crises is developed to be used with critical aspects of the social system to predict both crisis and postcrisis period role changes. Showed that the most powerful influence on the church activism of either husband or wife was the activism of the spouse, particularly the wife. Explores the social determinants of the timing of the first birth in a nationwide sample of 6,752 women. Results showed education at marriage is the most important predictor. Although a few social determinants (i.e., race and religion) have a direct effect, most affect age at first birth through education. (JAC)

Developed and tested a causal model for degree of difficulty of the transition to parenthood using data collected from interviewing 54 White married couples whose first child was three to five months old.
