Studies of Black families in varying social classes are reviewed to determine the prevailing power relationship between spouses. In general, Black families appear to be more egalitarian than White families; the middle-class Black family is more egalitarian than any other family type. (Author)

The social power theory of parental identification was supported. Perceived outcome-control power was the weakest power variable and perceived referent power was generally the strongest variable. Lack of consistent patterning of parental identification by sex of adolescent and parent is evidenced. (Author)

Tests the viability of resource theory for explaining adolescent perceptions of parental power. Regression analyses support the resource theory approach. Investigated influence of resource exchanges and gender role on marital power. Compared dual-career (N=50) and single-career (N=50) couples. Found two couple types did not differ in perceived power nor in self-reported strategies for influencing spouses. Found gender role orientation did not affect marital power. (Author/CM)
