Faculty development programs were introduced to help physician-teachers improve their competence in academic skills. The current status of faculty development programs in departments of family medicine were assessed via a questionnaire survey mailed to directors of family medicine residency programs. (MLW)

Three parallel studies of teaching skills in clinical medical education, undertaken as the basis for faculty development program planning, are reported. The study's design and methodology allow replication at individual institutions for development of programs focusing on specific teaching skills desired. (MSE)

Obstacles to developing training programs in geriatric medicine include shortage of faculty members and negative attitudes toward geriatrics on the part of students. For two years, family medicine residents have participated in a required rotation in geriatric medicine at the Duke University Medical Center. (Author/MLW)

A family practice center study analyzed the content of teaching occurring in 276 face-to-face chart review sessions by microcomputer to compile reports of problem types encountered by residents, pertinent discussion topics, and related learning needs.
