A course to introduce medical students to formal models of medical diagnostic reasoning at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is described. The students are encouraged to integrate facts and concepts from the basic sciences into strategies of diagnostic reasoning. (MLW)

A course in therapeutic decision-making, designed by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences is described. Goals were to introduce the student to a rational method of making therapeutic decisions and to give the student experience in formulating therapeutic plans. (MLW)

Instruction in electrocardiogram interpretation was provided for students at the University of Calgary by distributing complete cardiograms to them at the beginning of the week, for nine weeks, followed by analysis by an instructor at the end of the week. Skill development, reinforcement, course evaluation, and student satisfaction are described.

Describes a course titled Analytic Medicine which is intended to provide the opportunity and the necessary skills, through a problem-oriented approach, for medical students to learn to reason scientifically and to utilize analytic processes, including computers, in making clinical decisions. A seminar was developed to increase students' learning opportunities in respiratory disease and to identify common problem areas in hospital medical care. It provided practice in clinical diagnosis and patient management by promoting dialog, faculty feedback, and self-evaluation. Specific case studies are used for discussion. (MSE)

A required fourth-year course integrating the social sciences and humanities into the required clinical medical curriculum at Dartmouth Medical School is intended to prepare students to deal with the social and humanistic issues involved in medical practice, including law, ethics, economics, and social anthropology.
