Of the responding 20 participants, 12 were pursuing careers in science and medicine, and half of the 16 respondents with career plans reported that the program had influenced their career decisions. A 5-year study of medical students who had participated in a first-year elective course on cancer found that 47% of all participants subsequently became involved in other cancer programs. A problem-based continuing medical education program to improve the diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism by primary care physicians used a computer-simulated patient, individualized feedback, and a follow-up reading.
