Blake, Anthony J. D.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
In this study 126 high school students were administered the Karplus Island Puzzle and interviewed individually to determine if the puzzle measured Piagetian-type operational thinking. Results indicated that the puzzle did not characterize an individual's cognitive level. (SL)

Blake, Anthony J. D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Investigated the predictive power of two written tests of Piagetian developmental level, The Understanding in Science Test and the Reasoning Test. Also examined the extent to which two variables, level of reading comprehension and level of field dependence-independence, were associated with performance of secondary school Australian students on…

Thornton, Melvin C.; Fuller, Robert G. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Reports results of a study investigating the ability of college students to solve problems using proportional reasoning. Also discusses implications for consideration of Piagetian cognitive level of students in planning college courses. (CS)

Farmer, Walter A.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Determined the degree to which classification of students (N=512) as formal or concrete based on three Inhelder tasks administered by clinical interview method was mirrored by Longeot and Karplus-Lawson-Renner (KLR) classifications. Results indicate that Longeot and KLR differentiate between concrete/formal operations and are discussed from…

Shayer, Michael; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Describes a set of Science Reasoning Tasks which are valid and reliable for assessing the ability of children to use concrete and formal reasoning strategies and can be used by science teachers without professional training in Piagetian studies. Thirty pupils can be tested on each task in about 50 minutes. (Author/DS)

DeLuca, Frederick P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Reexamined Piagetian stages of males (N=182) and females (N=176), ages nine to eighteen, using cluster analysis, and sought information concerning occurrence of stages and influence of different tasks and gender on cluster patterns. Findings, among others, indicate that deviation from Piagetian stages was influenced by gender and type of task.…

Juraschek, W. A.; Grady, M. T. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Determined if certain variations in the format of Inhelder and Piaget's Equilibrium in the Balance task have any effect on how students (175 undergraduate and 32 ninth graders) are classified. Suggests that researchers allow subjects to experiment with the apparatus to insure proper classification of stage of development. (Author/DS)

Smith, Susan R.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Study investigated the relationship between children's (N=66) length conservation status and ability to acquire specific length measurement skills, and examined the interaction between mode of instruction (manipulative, graphic, and abstract) and conservation status. The expectation that length conservers would outperform nonconservers on…

Shayer, Michael; Wylam, Hugh – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Describes the development of a Piagetian demonstration group test utilized to assess 9-12 year-old students' (N=161) understanding of heat and temperature. Findings include a unitary relationship between Piagetian stages of development and levels of understanding of heat concepts. (DS)
