Pringle, Rhodell G.; Morgan, Ashley G. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Uses a Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) as an indicator of field-independency in an investigation with college graduate students. Results reveal that GEFT scores were not affected by the treatment of 18 hours of instruction in Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) materials or by pretesting effects. (CP)

Tamir, P.; Jungwirth, E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
A battery of tests was administered to three groups of high school students who studied the Israel Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) Adaptation Program for several years. Compared with non-BSCS students, the progress of the BSCS students in biological knowledge, inquiry skills, and understanding of science demonstrates the feasibility of…

Somers, Ronald L.; Lagdamen, Juan M., Jr. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Studied the intellectual differences between third and fourth grade Filipino children who had studied Science--A Process Approach (SAPA) and others who had studied a traditional curriculum. The SAPA children performed significantly better than the control group on a test of observing, comparing, and classifying simple geometric objects. (MLH)

D'Amboise, Angela; Searles, William E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1974
The study investigates the usefulness of teaching science courses that have a commonality of subject matter and a sequential patterning of operations. Introductory Physical Science (IPS) and CHEM Study courses were compared. The results indicated IPS is a useful background for CHEM Study. (BR)

Krebs, Eugene W.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Measures whether pre-school children (ages 34 to 65 months) can master concepts of the first five exercises of K-level science--A Process Approach (SAPA) within seven weeks with four lessons of 10 minutes each week. More than 90 percent of the sample of 226 achieved at the 90 percent competency level. (CP)

Kline, Arlyn A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1971
There were no significant differences in achievement between students using an earth science laboratory block with or without teacher direction. (AL)

Hart, Earl Paul; Toews, William – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Explores the use of free sort methodology to compare BSCS student and teacher understanding of the BSCS conceptual framework. Results support the idea that teachers who have better understanding of the BSCS conceptual framework, as shown by their sort patterns, may impart this understanding more effectively to students. (CS)

Willson, Victor L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Reports that teachers exhibit a stable degree of persistence in utilizing selected elementary and secondary NSF science curricula in the western United States. Differences between teachers trained in the NSF curricula and a control sample indicate that elementary workshop participants tended to utilize NSF-sponsored curricula longer than did…

Tamir, Pinchas – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Achievement scores of Israeli high school students using Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) materials were shown to be significantly higher than those for students using another curriculum. (MLH)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Curriculum, Educational Research, Instruction

Lashier, W. S., Jr.; Nieft, J. W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Conclusions include that, between Intermediate Science Curriculum Study (ISCS) courses and non-ISCS courses, there is no difference between the students' perception of both classroom activities and teacher personality traits. (MLH)

Froehlich, Kurt P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1974
This study was designed to see if objectives accompanying test items increased cognitive learning. The results indicate that objectives accompanying pretest items facilitate student study and preparation for posttests, but objectives accompanying posttest items inhibited performance. (BR)

Peterson, Kenneth D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Fifty-nine secondary school physics students were assigned to treatment groups: (1) Project Physics units, (2) Project Physics and verbal learning unit, and (3) a training program in scientific inquiry. Posttest results revealed that, on most aspects of a science inquiry test, treatments 2 and 3 had significantly greater effect on achievement than…

Linn, Marcia C.; Peterson, Rita W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1973
This study was conducted to analyze the classification ability of middle class, culturally diverse, and visually impaired children after instruction in a Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) unit. The SCIS unit was effective in improving student abilities to classify. (PS)

Tamir, Pinchas; Lunetta, Vincent N. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Reports on the administration of a biology cognitive preference test to 177 science-oriented high school students. Subjects were asked to rank responses or "extension statements" to items according to their preference. It was found that the high-ability students as a group had a very high preference for questioning and low preference for recall.…

Krockover, Gerald H.; Malcolm, Marshall D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Describes research undertaken to determine if Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) can be instrumental in helping children either maintain or develop a positive self-concept. A total of 189 students in grades 3-6 were assigned to treatment and control groups for a period of four and one-half months. Findings did not reveal overall…
