Hoz, Ron; Bowman, Dan; Chacham, Tova – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1997
Students (N=14) in a geomorphology course took an objective geomorphology test, the tree construction task, and the Standardized Concept Structuring Analysis Technique (SConSAT) version of concept mapping. Results suggest that the SConSAT knowledge structure dimensions have moderate to good construct validity. Contains 82 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Psychology, Concept Mapping, Educational Strategies, Geology

Kozma, Robert B.; Russell, Joel – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1997
Examines how professional chemists and undergraduate chemistry students respond to chemistry-related video segments, graphs, animations, and equations. Discusses the role that surface features of representations play in the understanding of chemistry. Contains 36 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Cognitive Psychology, Educational Strategies, Higher Education

Boo, Hong Kwen – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
Investigates Grade 12 students' understandings of the nature of chemical bonds and the energetics elicited across five familiar chemical reactions following a course of instruction. Discusses the many ways in which students can misconstruct concepts and principles. Contains 63 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Chemical Bonding, Chemistry, Concept Formation, Educational Strategies

Milne, Catherine – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
Identifies four different types of science stories: (1) heroic; (2) discovery; (3) declarative; and (4) politically correct. Examines the philosophical assumptions that underpin heroic science stories. Considers the implications of these stories in the science classroom. Contains 33 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Educational Strategies, Elementary Secondary Education, Epistemology

Roth, Wolff-Michael; McGinn, Michelle K. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
Discusses how scientific knowledge emerges from social, natural, political, cultural, historical, and economic contingencies of scientific work. Illustrates the advantages of familiarity with research in science and technology. Contains 96 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Educational Strategies, Elementary Secondary Education, Epistemology

Norris, Stephen P.; Kvernbekk, Tone – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1997
Addresses the question of what bearing the nature of educational theories has on their application to practice and focuses on the application of normative goal-directed theories of science education. Contains 40 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Psychology, Educational Strategies, Elementary Secondary Education, Epistemology

Driver, Rosalind – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1997
In response to an article in the same issue by Norris and Kvernbekk, argues that the theory of Driver and associates, elaborated upon in the three articles which form the basis for their analysis, is not a normative goal-directed theory. (DDR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Psychology, Educational Strategies, Elementary Secondary Education, Epistemology

Kawagley, Angayuqaq Oscar; Norris-Tull, Delena; Norris-Tull, Roger A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
Presents evidence from the Yupiaq culture that demonstrates a body of scientific thought and epistemology that differs from that of Western science. Contends that this information can provide a more culturally relevant framework for science learning for some students. Contains 20 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: American Indian Culture, Concept Formation, Educational Strategies, Elementary Secondary Education

Windschitl, Mark; Andre, Thomas – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
Investigates the effects of a constructivist versus objectivist learning environment on college students' conceptual change using a computer simulation of the human cardiovascular system as an instructional tool. Contains 33 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Computer Uses in Education, Concept Formation, Constructivism (Learning), Educational Strategies

Sadler, Philip M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
Reports on a study that uses psychometric modeling to rank the appeal of a variety of children's astronomical ideas on a single uniform scale. Findings support the view that alternative conceptions may be markers of progress toward understanding. Contains 82 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Concept Formation, Data Analysis, Educational Strategies

Harding, Patricia A.; Vining, Leo C. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1997
Discusses the notion that scientific knowledge is not dependable and that knowledge is no longer valued as a part of science. Points out that this has led to approaches that aim to teach scientific methods or problem-solving skills rather than scientific knowledge. Contains 19 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Educational Strategies, Elementary Secondary Education, Epistemology, Knowledge Representation

Noh, Taehee; Scharmann, Lawrence C. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1997
Describes a study that explores the instructional influence of presenting pictures at the molecular level when introducing chemistry concepts and solving chemistry problems. Explores the effect of the pictures on students' conceptions and problem-solving abilities. Contains 59 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Analysis of Covariance, Chemistry, Cognitive Structures
