Smith, Edward L.; Padilla, Michael J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Examines strategies used by first grade children in performing a seriation task, using materials varying in length or weight. Most first-grade children employed a concept-task-strategy in serially ordering objects by length and weight. In addition Piaget's observation that length can be serially ordered before weight was upheld. (CP)

Abdullah, Kemal Bin; Lowell, Walter E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Reports results of a study to assess ability of children from different age groups (N=144) to generalize two hierarchically related concepts (Insect and Animal) with and without instruction in the form of a mental set. Also examined effects of age, I.Q., and sex on ability to generalize these concepts. (Author/JN)

Nussbaum, Joseph – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
Examines the effect of relevant group instruction on various children's developmental stages regarding the conception of space. (Author/GA)

Doyle, Jerry J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Examined was the attainment of projective spatial concepts of third-, sixth-, and ninth-grade students. Eight Piagetian-type tasks were developed to provide evidence for Piaget's model of groupings of mental structures dealing with time and space. Task performance among grade levels and gender was examined. (CS)

Metz, Kathleen E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
The development of children's causal knowledge is investigated by analyzing changes in the content and form of the explanations they generate across the age span of three to nine years. The balance of incremental versus fundamental change and the forms each takes in children coming to understand the working of gears are examined. Three phases of…

Jones, M. Gail; Brader-Araje, Laura; Carboni, Lisa Wilson; Carter, Glenda; Rua, Melissa J.; Banilower, Eric; Hatch, Holly – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2000
Observes 16 students from five elementary science classes to examine how students use tools when constructing new knowledge during science instruction, how control of tools is actualized from pedagogical perspectives, how language and tool accessibility intersect, how gender intersects with tool use, and how competition for resources impacts…

Lunn, Stephen; Solomon, Joan – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2000
Examines primary teachers' confidence and identity as science teachers in tandem with their views on the British National Curriculum and the warrants they give for those views. Collects data using in-depth interviews with a small sample of primary teachers, setting their views in the context of their science-related life stories. (Contains 28…

Benenson, Gary – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2001
Technology education should play a far more substantial role in schools. Defines the term technology and presents a comprehensive set of goals for elementary technology education. (Contains 30 references.) (Author/YDS)

Doran, Rodney L.; Ngoi, Mbuya K. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
Explores the idea that retention of particular concepts must occur before a student can transfer his learning to new situations. Investigates retention and transfer of fifth and sixth graders, in which achievement level was assessed on some advanced concepts as a function of performance on related basic concepts. (CS)

Venville, Grady – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2004
Although research from a developmental/psychological perspective indicates that many children do not have a scientific understanding of living things, even by the age of 10 years, little research has been conducted about how students learn this science topic in the classroom. This exploratory research used a case-study design and qualitative…

Marek, Edmund A.; Methven, Suzanne B. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
Reports a study that investigated the relationship among (1) teacher's attitudes and implementation of inservice workshop developed learning cycle science materials, and (2) elementary school student's conservation reasoning and language used to describe properties of objects. Data were gathered from 100 students from grades K-5 and 16 teachers…

Glasson, George E.; Lalik, Rosary V. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1993
This study investigated whether Science Curriculum Improvement Study or more recent interpretations of the learning cycle could be used by teachers to engage students in social constructivist learning. Two researchers and six science teachers implemented instruction based on the reciprocal use of language and action. Changing beliefs and practices…

Zembal-Saul, Carla; Blumenfeld, Phyllis; Krajcik, Joseph – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2000
Examines changes in the science content representations of two prospective elementary teachers during their first year in an experimental teacher preparation program. Finds that opportunities to engage in cycles of instruction guided by structured considerations for content representation contributed to improvements in the teachers' science…

Perry, Bruce; Obenauf, Patricia – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1987
Reports on a study which investigated the order of acquisition of intuitive notions of qualitative speed. Results indicated that an array of prerequisites, equivalent, and independent relationships existed among the tasks administered. Confirmed the evolution of reasoning for notions of qualitative speed found by Piaget. (Author/TW)

Akerson, Valarie L.; Abd-El-Khalick, Fouad; Lederman, Norman G. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2000
Discusses the influence of a reflective, explicit, activity-based approach to nature of science (NOS) instruction used in an elementary science methods course on preservice teachers' views of some aspects of the nature of science. Finds that participants made substantial gains in their views of some of the target NOS aspects. Advocates a…
