Bell, Paul E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1970
Indicates that a large section of general education biology students can be divided into smaller groups, each receiving different amounts and kinds of instruction, with no apparent effect on their achievement, their attitudes toward the course, or their attitudes toward science. (LS)
Descriptors: Biology, College Science, Curriculum, General Education

Bryant, Napoleon, Jr.; Anderson, Hans A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1972
Effects of performance objectives on achievement of black inner city pupils were studied. Two groups of trained and untrained teachers in preparing performance objectives were formed. Results showed positive effects of teachers trained in the use of performance objectives. (PS)
Descriptors: Behavioral Objectives, Classroom Research, Educational Research, Instruction

Mathis, Philip M.; Shrum, John W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
College biology students attending an audio-tutorial center with high kinetic structure performed significantly better on achievement tests than students in a corresponding low kinetic structure laboratory. Gives numerous other findings concerning measurable aspects of audio-tutorial settings. (MLH)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Biology, College Science, Higher Education

Nelson, Miles A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1973
Two postlaboratory discussion strategies (Probing and Nonprobing) were tested for effectiveness on learning science concepts by sixth graders. Similar laboratory experiences were provided to all, but discussion strategies differed. Analysis indicated significantly higher mean gain scores for the Nonprobing strategy group. (PS)
Descriptors: Discussion, Educational Research, Elementary School Science, Instruction

Ogunyemi, E.'Lanre – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1972
A 2x3x2 factorial design was used to study the effects of sex, verbalization of concepts by students, and information supplied by other students" or teachers" or performance in a multiple classification seriation task by fourth grade students. There was a significant interaction of sex and information source. (AL)
Descriptors: Classification, Educational Research, Elementary School Science, Instruction

Holliday, William G. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
Describes an aptitude treatment interaction (ATI) hypothesis used to investigate relationships among aptitudes and science instructional treatments in terms of student performance. It is proposed that ATI research work in science education will systematically yield reliable generalizations about how to adapt instruction to individuals with…

Rowsey, Robert E.; Mason, William H. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Concludes that the group taught by the audio-tutorial method made significantly higher scores than did the lecture-laboratory group on both (1) achievement tests and (2) a retention test administered 11 weeks after the termination of the college Animal Biology course. (MLH)
Descriptors: Biology, College Science, Educational Research, Higher Education

Sakmyser, Diane D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1974
Reports the results of a study designed to compare the effects of inductive and deductive programmed instruction on students' achievement in high school chemistry classes. (JR)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Deduction, Educational Research, Induction

Anderson, Elaine J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Investigates the effects of combined learning cues (pretest and behavioral objectives) on the achievement levels of teachers in an inservice course. Subjects receiving the combined learning cues did not achieve at a significantly higher level than did those who did not receive the combined learning cues. (CP)
Descriptors: Achievement, Behavioral Objectives, Cues, Educational Research

Swanson, David H.; Denton, Jon J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Compares student achievement and retention scores of secondary school chemistry students who were involved in: (1) learning-for-mastery, (2) personalized system of instruction and (3) control (independent study) modes of remediation work. Higher retention and more objectives were recorded by the learning-for-mastery group. (CP)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Educational Research, Instruction, Remedial Instruction

Davis, Terry; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Descriptors: Educational Research, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science, Instruction

Hall, John Ruthven – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Two British elementary classes were taught chemistry by either Scheme A, involving the idea of chemical reactions as combination or decomposition, or Scheme B, the Nuffield inductive method utilizing heat and weight changes. Test results showed that Class A performed significantly better. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, Educational Research, Elementary Education

Ott, Mary Diederich; Macklin, David B. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
This study investigated interactions between student traits and treatments. Engineering and physics majors were enrolled in either a lecture-recitation-laboratory section, or an audio-tutorial section of an introductory physics course. No significant differences were found between the two groups, but an interaction was found between two traits…
Descriptors: College Science, Educational Research, Higher Education, Instruction

McGuire, Christine – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Discusses the use, types, and advantages of simulation activities in problem-solving instruction. Reviews a research study of simulation in medical education. (MLH)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Higher Education, Instruction, Learning Activities

Hermann, G. D.; Hincksman, N. G. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
With a sample of 229 ninth-grade chemistry students, an investigation of students' retention abilities as related to instructional approach (inductive or deductive), IQ, gender, and anxiety level was conducted. Results showed that subjects experiencing deductive instruction performed slightly better on an immediate retention test. Girls…
