Ladd, George T.; Andersen, Hans O. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1970
Descriptors: Achievement, Classroom Communication, Earth Science, Grade 9

Riley, Joseph P., II – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Evaluated the comparative efficacy of the three most popular classification systems in terms of preservice elementary school teachers' ability to classify questions and their attitudes toward questioning. The classification schemes used were those of Aschner, Bloom, and Sanders. Advantages of the Aschner-based system are discussed. (CS)

Tobin, Kenneth G. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Investigated the effects of variation in teacher wait-time on science achievement for students (N=733) in 11 Australian middle schools. Conclusions provide evidence that the extension of teacher wait-time produces desirable changes in achievement. (CS)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Middle Schools, Questioning Techniques, Science Education

Rowe, Mary Budd – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1974
Presents some considerations about the variable of "wait time," a pause after a teacher question so that students can think or a pause after a student statement. (PEB)

Beisenherz, Paul C. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1973
Studied the utilization and effectiveness of a televised science series in 54 first through fourth-grade classrooms, using multiple category systems to analyze the questioning behavior of studio and classroom teachers. Concluded that questioning behaviors of teachers with or without the teachers' manual was influenced by the TV broadcast. (CC)

Chewprecha, Thongchai; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Tests the effectiveness of three training methods as self-training materials in modifying questioning behavior including wait time of Thai high school chemistry teachers. Concludes that studying pamphlets and qualitative listening to audiotapes improves questioning; pamphlets study also improves wait time. (CS)
Descriptors: Autoinstructional Aids, Educational Research, Independent Study, Inservice Education

Otto, Paul B.; Schuck, Robert F. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1983
Six biology teachers and 90 students participated in this study. Results indicate that teachers can be trained to use a systematic questioning technique, trained teachers can employ the technique in classroom settings, and students taught by the technique achieve higher and retain knowledge longer than those in control groups. (JN)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Biology, Grade 8, Program Effectiveness

Swift, J. Nathan; Gooding, C. Thomas – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1983
Investigated effects of increasing middle school teachers' (N=40) wait time on general questioning skills in science teaching. Four groups (10 teachers each) were used: control; group receiving printed guides on discussion/techniques; group using an electronic feedback device; group using both guides and feedback device. Results, conclusions, and…
