Steedle, Jeffrey T.; Shavelson, Richard J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2009
Assessments associated with learning progressions are designed to provide diagnostic information about the level and nature of student understanding. Valid interpretations of such diagnoses are only possible when students consistently express the ideas associated with a single learning progression level. Latent class analysis was employed to…

Preece, Peter F. W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
This study explores the acquisition of proportionality by investigating the relationship between an understanding of proportionality and the development of cognitive structure in the domain of mechanics. (Author/MA)

Piburn, Michael – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Tested the hypothesis that spatial reasoning is a significant correlate both of formal thought, as defined by Piaget's measures of the proportionality schema, and of achievement in science. Sex differences in proportional reasoning and spatial skills in 6th-form (11- year-old) students from a New Zealand high school were also examined. (CS)

Dodick, Jeff; Orion, Nir – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2003
Presents a model that describes how students reconstruct geological transformations over time. Defines the critical factors influencing reconstructive thinking: (1) the transformation scheme, which influences the other diachronic schemes; (2) knowledge of geological processes; and (3) extracognitive factors. (Author/KHR)

Goodstein, Madeline; Howe, Ann C. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Hypothesized that instructional methods employing concrete models and exemplars of a concept will lead to better student understanding at both the concrete and formal operational levels of cognitive development. However, concrete operational students did not profit from the instructional methods and results were not clear for early formal…

Lowell, Walter E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
Explores the relationship of an individual's reliance or nonreliance upon concrete cues in problem solving and performance on a model-based measure of hierarchical classification. Level of cognitive development, as determined by performance on Piaget-type tasks, generally predicted hierarchical classification ability of junior- and senior-high…

Rowell, J. A.; Hoffmann, P. J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
High school students in South Australia were administered in group fashion the pendulum and the chemical color change developmental tasks. The major conclusion of this study is the fact that it is possible to translate into group form, administer, and assess rapidly and with considerable reliability Piagetian problem indicators of developmental…

Herron, J. Dudley – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
This commentary refers to a recent paper (1975) by Sayer and Ball in this journal concerning the relationships between formal operational thought and science achievement, and requests additional information on the representativeness of the sample and the performance of boys and girls on the Piagetian tasks. The requested information is provided.…

Hale, James P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
A sample of 108 eight-grade students using Intermediate Science Curriculum Study (ISCS) were tested with four Piagetian tasks: two tasks were related to ISCS concepts, two were not. Concludes that no students were formal operational, most were concrete operational, and most performed better on the non-ISCS related tasks. (MLH)

Coll, Richard K.; Treagust, David F. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2003
Explores secondary school, undergraduate, and graduate level learners' mental models of bonding with ionic substances through an interview protocol involving the use of physical substances and a focus card containing depictions of ionic bonding and structure. Suggests that teachers and university faculty need to provide stronger links between the…

Huddle, P. A.; Pillay, A. E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1996
Analyzes students' attempts to answer examination questions involving stoichiometry and chemical equilibrium and reports that the majority of the students do not fully understand either concept. Concludes that the main difficulty with these topics is that they are highly abstract and first taught to students before they have reached the stage of…

Karplus, Robert; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Thirteen to fifteen year-old students from Denmark, Sweden, Italy, United States, Austria, Germany, and Great Britain were the subjects on this study of formal thought processes. Socioeconomic status, sex, and school organization provided additional categorization upon which the subjects were divided. Chi square analysis revealed some differences.…

Lawson, Anton E.; Bealer, Jonathan M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Five items requiring use of proportional, probabilistic, and correlational reasoning were administered to students (N=391) in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12. Argues that successful qualitative reasoning arises as a consequence of equilibration and influences selection of course work and that specific instruction may initiate the equilibration process.…

Blake, Anthony J. D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Investigated the predictive power of two written tests of Piagetian developmental level, The Understanding in Science Test and the Reasoning Test. Also examined the extent to which two variables, level of reading comprehension and level of field dependence-independence, were associated with performance of secondary school Australian students on…
