Lawson, Anton E.; Renner, John W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Secondary science students were tested, using Piagetian tasks to determine their level of intellectual development, and then tested on scientific concepts classified as concrete or formal. Results showed significant multiple correlations between the scores on the tasks and the subject matter tests. (MLH)
Descriptors: Developmental Tasks, Educational Research, Intellectual Development, Learning Theories

Staver, John R.; Harty, Harold – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
Designs a testing situation to examine the presence of combinatorial analysis, to establish construct validity in the use of an instrument, Combinatorial Analysis Behavior Observation Scheme (CABOS), and to investigate the presence of the schema in young adolescents. (Author/GA)

Shayer, Michael; Adey, Philip S. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1992
Two years after the end of a two-year intervention program set within the context of science learning intended to promote formal operational thinking, achievement of students (n=234) was tested by their results on British National examinations taken at age 16. Male experimental subjects achieved an average of 40 percent more grades of C or above…

Marek, Edmund A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Provides evidence to support the conclusion that relationships exist among Piagetian levels of intellectual development, intelligence quotient, content achievement, and inquiry skills in ninth and tenth grade biology students (N=92). (DS)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Biology, Cognitive Development, Grade 10

Lawson, Anton E.; Bealer, Jonathan M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Investigated the development of formal reasoning among students (ages 10-18 years) from predominately White, middle-class communities located in rural, suburban homogeneous, and suburban heterogeneous areas. Results indicate clear differences among communities in formal reasoning ability. Implications for using science instruction to promote…

Lazarowitz, Reuven – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Purposes of this study were to (1) develop an instrument requiring several classification activities; (2) investigate the correlation between classification ability and intelligence scores of junior high school students (N=365); and (3) determine if classification ability differs with age and gender. Findings included a significant correlation…

Juraschek, W. A.; Grady, M. T. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
Determined if certain variations in the format of Inhelder and Piaget's Equilibrium in the Balance task have any effect on how students (175 undergraduate and 32 ninth graders) are classified. Suggests that researchers allow subjects to experiment with the apparatus to insure proper classification of stage of development. (Author/DS)
