Goodstein, Madeline; Howe, Ann C. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Hypothesized that instructional methods employing concrete models and exemplars of a concept will lead to better student understanding at both the concrete and formal operational levels of cognitive development. However, concrete operational students did not profit from the instructional methods and results were not clear for early formal…

Coll, Richard K.; Treagust, David F. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2003
Explores secondary school, undergraduate, and graduate level learners' mental models of bonding with ionic substances through an interview protocol involving the use of physical substances and a focus card containing depictions of ionic bonding and structure. Suggests that teachers and university faculty need to provide stronger links between the…

Popp, Leonard; Raven, Ronald – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1972
Constructed response and multiple choice modes of programed instruction were compared. Both formats enhanced classification performance; the effect was greatest when the criterion test was in the same mode as the instruction. (AL)

Pallrand, George J.; Moretti, Victor – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Questions how cognitive ability and aptitude of graduating high school students taking science courses compare to students in other programs. Explores a related question concerning the extent to which different Piagetian schemes are related to instructional patterns. Results show that students operating at higher cognitive levels take more science…

Good, Ron; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Studied classroom behaviors and conservation ability of elementary school science students taught by either Student-Structured Learning in Science (SSLS) or Teacher-Structured Learning in Science (TSLS). Reports on how behavior of conservers and nonconservers differs in SSLS and TSLS with respect to observing, following directions, and inventing…

Grosslight, Lorraine; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
Students' conceptions of models and how models function in science were assessed by administering a clinical interview about models to a group of mixed-ability seventh and honors eleventh grade students. Students' preconceptions about models, themes that appeared regularly during interviews, differences of themes between the two groups, and the…

Duschl, Richard A.; Gitomer, Drew H. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
A model of the character and mechanism for knowledge restructuring is presented and a model of educational practice designed to facilitate this form of restructuring is described. A broadened and integrated view of assessment and instruction called a portfolio culture, central to the educational model, is discussed. (KR)

Roadrangka, Vantipa; Yeany, Russell H. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1985
Data from 60 observations of 10 teachers and 10 each of their students showed that type/quality of teaching strategy predicted 37 percent of variance in engagement and that the more indirect the teaching strategy, the greater the students' involvement in learning tasks. Implications of these and other findings are discussed. (Author/JN)

Cohen, Herbert G. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1984
Investigated what effects two instructional strategies (related to student use of manipulative materials) would have on second-grade students' (N=96) development of logical structures. Also examined the effects of sex on logical development. Results indicate that supplying manipulative materials alone is not adequate in promoting development of…

Yerrick, Randy K.; Doster, Elizabeth; Nugent, Jeffrey S.; Parke, Helen M.; Crawley, Frank E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2003
Presents an existence proof of how preservice science teachers used analogies embedded in their course materials, Physics by Inquiry. Reports three distinct roles of analogies: a) cognitive process skills; b) scientific conceptual understanding; and c) social contexts for problem solving. Agrees on the importance of collaborative problem solving…

Gipson, Michael H.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Presented is a study in which students' intellectual reasoning development was evaluated following instruction that emphasized formal operations in a traditional lecture format. Results indicated that formal-operational students had significantly more success in the three reasoning areas than transitional students and transitional students had…

Leonard, William H. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1992
An interactive computer/videodisc learning approach to the conventional laboratory approach for learning biology concepts and science process skills were compared. The two approaches appear equivalent when evaluated by traditional learning outcomes, but the interactive videodisc strategy was significantly more time efficient than a traditional…

Lawson, Anton E.; Wollman, Warren T. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2003
According to Piaget's theory, maturation of the nervous system is sufficient for the development of formal thought. If this were the case, the job of the educational system would be small indeed. Rather, maturation determines only the totality of possibilities and impossibilities at a given stage. This study investigates whether instructional…

Ryman, Don – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Reports on twelve year-old students instructed in Nuffield Project and in "traditional" classrooms. A division of the subjects into two groups based on intelligence revealed significant differences on classification ability. Interaction effects were also observed. (CP)

Willerman, Marvin; Mac Harg, Richard A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
A control group of 40 eighth graders completed a unit on elements and compounds. An experimental group of 42 completed concept maps on the same topic. Results of a one-tailed T test demonstrated the usefulness of concept maps as advance organizers. (KR)
