Experimental Research and Social Policy: Must It Be Rigor versus Relevance?
Brewer, Marilynn B.
Journal of Social Issues, v41 n4 p159-76 1985
Unnecessary polarization between research traditions (basic vs. applied, experimental vs. correlational, and laboratory vs. field research) has resulted in extreme, nonproductive conflict between experimental rigor and policy relevance. The analogue model (described) grounds experimental studies in social problems without losing the unique advantages of experiments for clarifying causal relations and process. (GC)
