Juola, James F.; McDermott, Dennis A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Reports an experiment with tasks involving memory search for a given probe word with respect to a set of semantic category labels for subjects in a word comparison task and a set of semantic category labels for subjects in the categorization task. The memory search process is fundamentally different in categorization and comparison tasks. (CLK)

Glanzer, Murray; Koppenaal, Lois – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
The effect of a classification, or encoding, task on intentional free recall was examined. Examination of the serial position curves for immediate and free recall shows clear effects assigned to long-term store. Consideration of effects regarding levels of processing gives a parallel account differing only in terminology and emphasis. (CHK)

McClelland, James L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Subjects learned meanings for 16 invented words and practiced categorizing each word according to its meaning. Each word appeared consistently in either script or uppercase type. Subsequently subjects categorized words in both versions; at first, categorization was slower for unfamiliar versions. Subjects relied on both configuration information…

Gellatly, A. R. H.; Gregg, V. H. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Meyer found subjects were faster to determine if a stimulus word was a member of either of two prespecified categories if the categories were close in meaning. A reanalysis of the data favors instead a model emphasizing the role of decision-making processes in categorization and flexibility of task strategies. (CHK)

Landauer, T. K.; Meyer, D. E. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1972
Expanded version of a talk presented at the meeting of the Eastern Verbal Investigators League, Brandeis University, May 1, 1971. (VM)

Hayes-Roth, Barbara; Hayes-Roth, Frederick – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
The "property-set model" is proposed for concept learning and subsequent recognition and classification of old and new exemplars. In an experimental evaluation of alternative models, the property-set model was the best predictor of both recognition and classification performance. (Author/RM)

Greitzer, Frank L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
In two experiments on free and cued recall, spacing between categorically related items, presentation rate and category size were varied and the effects on recall of items as a function of their serial order were studied. Results suggest subjects organize material during acquisition by retrieving and rehearsing previously studied items. (CHK)

Research conducted at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. (VM)
