Eddy, John K.; Glass, Arnold L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1981
Presents study performed to clarify the role that imagery plays in sentence understanding. Results show that reading selectively interferes with comprehension of high-imagery sentences and demonstrates that sentence comprehension is not a process that is independent of the decoding stage. Jacoby, Larry L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1983
Experiments demonstrating that perceptual identification and recognition memory both rely on memory for single prior processing episodes, contrary to common assumption, are reported. The balance between data-driven and conceptually-driven processing in reading is explored, and the effects of changing the subject's reliance on one or the other…

Glucksberg, Sam; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1982
Discusses a sequential, three-stage model of how nonliteral expressions are understood, as proposed in recent linguistic, philosophical, and psychological studies. Fischler, Ira; Bloom, Paul A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of sentence contexts on word recognition and reading. The questions of whether context is predominantly facilitating or inhibiting and how automatic the influence of contexts is on word retrieval were investigated. (SW)

Cirilo, Randolph K.; Foss, Donald J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1980
Explores two approaches to discourse structure and comprehension. Illustrates that prior knowledge is ued in conjunction with cues to construct the macrostructure of the story. Provides evidence that text comprehension is based on the presentation of the propositions of the story. (PMJ)

Graesser, Arthur, C.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1980
Describes a question-answering procedure for probing the reader's internal representation of prose. Examines two dimensions of a reader's conceptual organization of plot: hierarchical level and relational density of propositions. (PMJ)

Samuels, S. J.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Reports on a study of word recognition in second grade, fourth grade, sixth grade, and college students, which investigated characteristics of word processing (holistic versus component) at various stages of reading development. (AM)
