Holyoak, Keith J.; Glass, Arnold L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Three experiments were performed, based on the two hypotheses about the rejection of false statements. False statements are rejected because they are "contradictory sentences," i.e., there is a subject/predicate contradiction, and "counterexample sentences," which are rejected when a person thinks of a counterexample to the assertion. Harris, Richard J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
A study is reported investigating the question whether inferences made from sentences occur immediately in comprehension or are in part a function of the way material from sentences is stored in memory. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Comprehension, Language Research, Linguistic Theory
Franks, Jeffery J.; Bransford, John D. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
Reference is made to a 1973 article of Singer and Rosenberg regarding linguistic integration. Some of their arguments are supported, and certain claims about integration clarified. (RM)
Descriptors: Comprehension, Grammar, Language Research, Linguistic Theory
Rips, Lance J.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1973
Research supported by a United States Public Health Grant to Edward E. Smith. (VM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Distance, Experiments, Language Research
Kanouse, David E. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1972
Based on results reported in a doctoral dissertation completed at Yale University. (VM)
Descriptors: English, Experiments, Language Research, Psycholinguistics
Holyoak, Keith J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
This study was based on that of Jorgensen and Kintsch (1973) regarding verification time and ease of imagery of sentences. The present study concluded that the results of Jorgensen and Kintsch do not distinguish the effects of rated imagery on reaction time from the effects of semantic relatedness and semantic complexity. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Comprehension, Imagery, Language Research, Linguistic Theory
Moeser, Shannon D.; Bregman, Albert S. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1973
Research done while the first author was on a Science Scholarship from the National Research Council of Canada (NRC); research also supported by an NRC grant to the second author; forms part of Shannon Moeser's doctoral thesis submitted to McGill University. (VM)
Descriptors: Experiments, Imagery, Language Acquisition, Language Research
Walter, Donald A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1973
Research supported by contracts of the Advanced Research Projects Agency, Department of Defense, with the Human Performance Center, Department of Psychology, University of Michigan. (RS)
Descriptors: Decoding (Reading), Language Research, Mnemonics, Phonemics
James, Carlton T. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1972
Partial report of data presented at the 1971 convention of the Eastern Psychological Association. (VM)
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Experiments, Language Research, Memory
Hall, James W.; Crown, Irene – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1972
Descriptors: Adults, Age Differences, Association (Psychology), Children
Brewer, William F.; Lichtenstein, Edward H. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
Research is reported in which a memory-for-marked-semantic-features theory was juxtaposed to a memory-for-meaning theory. The results were interpreted as supporting a global memory-for-meaning theory. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Comprehension, Cues, Language Research
Moeser, Shannon Dawn – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
A set of experiments are reported in which it was found that most subjects were better at identifying both meaning and wording changes in concrete sentences and subjects took significantly longer to encode and decode the abstract sentences. Implications of these findings are discussed. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Comprehension, Imagery, Language Research
Lorch, Robert F. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Examines the verification of false sentences of the form "All S are P." It was found that the number of properties shared by the subject and predicate concept of the sentence was directly proportional to reaction time. These findings question the assumption that only property relations are prestored in memory. (Author/EJS)

Rips, Lance J.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Verifying simple sentences generally involves a process wherein the meanings of individual words are combined to form the meaning of the entire sentence. Three experiments are described in which the combination process was investigated by asking subjects to decide whether S-V-Adj-O sentences were true or false. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research, Psycholinguistics
Jarvella, Robert J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1971
Based on part of a dissertation submitted to the University of Michigan in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. Revised version of a paper given at the 80th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, Houston, Texas, November 1970. (VM)
