Franks, Jeffery J.; Bransford, John D. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
Reference is made to a 1973 article of Singer and Rosenberg regarding linguistic integration. Some of their arguments are supported, and certain claims about integration clarified. (RM)
Descriptors: Comprehension, Grammar, Language Research, Linguistic Theory
Holyoak, Keith J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
This study was based on that of Jorgensen and Kintsch (1973) regarding verification time and ease of imagery of sentences. The present study concluded that the results of Jorgensen and Kintsch do not distinguish the effects of rated imagery on reaction time from the effects of semantic relatedness and semantic complexity. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Comprehension, Imagery, Language Research, Linguistic Theory
Moeser, Shannon D.; Bregman, Albert S. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1973
Research done while the first author was on a Science Scholarship from the National Research Council of Canada (NRC); research also supported by an NRC grant to the second author; forms part of Shannon Moeser's doctoral thesis submitted to McGill University. (VM)
Descriptors: Experiments, Imagery, Language Acquisition, Language Research
James, Carlton T. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1972
Partial report of data presented at the 1971 convention of the Eastern Psychological Association. (VM)
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Experiments, Language Research, Memory
Rips, Lance J.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Verifying simple sentences generally involves a process wherein the meanings of individual words are combined to form the meaning of the entire sentence. Three experiments are described in which the combination process was investigated by asking subjects to decide whether S-V-Adj-O sentences were true or false. (Author/RM)

Jarvella, Robert J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1971
Based on part of a dissertation submitted to the University of Michigan in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. Revised version of a paper given at the 80th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, Houston, Texas, November 1970. (VM)

Rodd, Linda J.; Braine, Martin D. S. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1971
Revised version of an M.A. thesis submitted at the University of California, Santa Barbara, 1970, by Linda J. Rodd. (VM)
Descriptors: Children, Deep Structure, Experiments, Grammar
Morgan, James L.; Newport, Elissa L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1981
Describes an experiment where subjects were exposed to a sample of sentences from an artificial linguistic system and tested on their knowledge of the linear and hierarchical structures of the language. Suggests that learners succeed in inducing coherent grammatical systems only when input provides enough correlated cues to constituent…

Danks, Joseph H.; Sorce, Patricia A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1973
Research part of a Senior Honors Thesis submitted to Kent State University by Patricia Sorce, who was a National Science Foundation Undergraduate Research Participant while conducting this research. (VM)
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Experiments, Imagery, Language Research
Wright, Particia – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1972
Descriptors: Error Patterns, Experiments, Information Processing, Language Research
Tyler, Lorraine; Marslen-Wilson, William – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
A presentation of an experiment testing the claim that on-line syntactic processing is autonomous and not affected by semantic content. Results suggested that before the clause boundary is reached, syntactic decisions can be influenced by prior semantic context. An appendix containing numerous examples of clauses and probe words is included. (AMH)

Townsend, David J.; Bever, Thomas G. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
In two experiments, subjects were interrupted while listening to a two-clause sentence just before the last word of either the initial clause or the final clause. The two experiments together suggest that interclause semantic relations affect the immediate processing of clauses. (Author/EJS)
