Under certain experimental conditions, it was affirmed more quickly that a word belonged to a large category than to a small one. This, in conjunction with other experiment results, contradicts predictions of previous theories of word meaning and supports a feature selection theory derived from Garner's critical realism position. Results in Experiment I contradict certain predictions regarding the effect of presentation time on nominal and functional serial-position curves. Experiment II indicates that differences between nominal and functional curves are not an artifact produced by item selection. (Author/RM)

Clark's arguments for treating language materials as random rather than fixed effects are examined, and the problems with random effects designs and approximate statistical tests (quasi F-ratios) are reviewed. It is suggested that researchers use fixed factors. (Author/RM)
