Kolers, Paul A.; Brison, Susan J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1984
Questions the theory of a common conceptual code for knowledge and shows that some of the claims for bilingual equivalence may be accommodated by notions of strategy, set, and skill. Suggests that means-specific representations may provide as plausible an account of knowledge as appeals to a common code do. (EKN)

Kroll, Judith F.; Potter, Mary C. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1984
Reports on experiments that address the question of whether pictures and the words that name them access a common conceptual representation. Results suggest that the major component in a lexical or objective decision is a form-specific memory representation of the work or visual object. (EKN)

Bartlett, James Craig; Tulving, Endel – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
Two experiments are reported investigating the effects of immediate recall upon subsequent recall and recognition of list items and examining the relation between positive and negative recency effects. (Author/RM)

Jarvella, Robert J.; Snodgrass, Joan Gay – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
Two experiments are reported in which subjects judged whether pairs of words viewed simultaneously contained the same stem morpheme. Reaction times for making these judgments are discussed. (Author/RM)

Scarborough, Don L.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1984
Discusses research which shows that bilinguals in a word recognition task are able to process the words of a language in a language-specific manner without any influence of their knowledge of the surface or conceptual represenations of words in the other language. (EKN)

Carroll, Marie; Kirsner, Kim – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1982
Investigates the role of context in two forms of recognition memory. The first of these involves conscious memory, the second, which may or may not include conscious memory, is manifested by an improvement in performance which occurs when words are repeated in a variety of perceptual recognition and classification tasks. (Author/MES)

Glanzer, Murray; Ehrenreich, S.L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Examines, through an investigation of the effect of word frequency on lexical decision, alternative views of how the internal lexicon is structured and searched. A model is developed based on two internal lists: one a ready-access list, the other a complete list. (Author/AM)

Moeser, Shannon Dawn – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
A set of experiments are reported in which it was found that most subjects were better at identifying both meaning and wording changes in concrete sentences and subjects took significantly longer to encode and decode the abstract sentences. Implications of these findings are discussed. (Author/RM)

Landauer, T. K.; Meyer, D. E. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1972
Expanded version of a talk presented at the meeting of the Eastern Verbal Investigators League, Brandeis University, May 1, 1971. (VM)

Sloboda, John A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Three experiments are reported regarding reaction time. Letter comparison time was found to increase when other irrelevant letters were present, regardless of whether or not the letters made up a word or a word-like configuration. Word comparison time was found to increase when distractors were similar to targets. (Author/RM)

Glenberg, Arthur; Adams, Frederick – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Rote, repetitive Type I Rehearsal is defined as the continuous maintenance of information in memory using the minimum cognitive capacity necessary for maintenance. An analysis of errors made on a forced-choice recognition test supported the hypothesis that acoustic-phonemic components of the memory trace are added or strengthened by this…

Stein, Barry S. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Two experiments examined the effects of level of processing and uniqueness of encoding on the ability to recognize the nominal stimulus among either semantically similar or structurally similar distractor items. (Author/NCR)
