Lowe, Thomas C.; Roberts, David C. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1972
Several problems of finding keys in directories are considered. Methods of searching ordered and unordered directories are analyzed. Searching on ranges of key values in also considered. Finally, design tradeoffs among the classes of directory and searching strategies are developed. (4 references) (Author/SJ)

And Others; Mittman, B. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Northwestern University's Remote Information Query System (RIQS), an information storage and retrieval system characterized by a mixture of data structures for the internal record organization, is discussed. On-line and batch mode search capabilities handle both textual and quantitative information. Other system characteristics, capabilities and…

Schultz, Louise – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1974
At BIOSIS, development of a retrieval system from the pragmatic viewpoint of providing viable self-supporting retrieval service from a data base of more than 2 million references has resulted in focusing attention on supporting the forumlation of the information need into an effective computer search specification. Taghva, Kazem; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1994
Discusses the use of optical character recognition (OCR) for inputting documents in an information retrieval system and describes a study that used an OCR-generated database and its corresponding corrected version to examine query evaluation in the presence of noisy data. Scanning technology, recognition technology, and retrieval technology are…

Taylor, Robert S. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1982
Discusses information systems in which information use becomes the prime design factor rather than technology and content. Highlighted topics include the change of useless data to productive knowledge, a value-added process; environments in which problems requiring information exist; and users' perceptions of the benefits and costs of using…

Ruocco, Anthony S.; Frieder, Ophir – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1997
Proposes use of parallel computing systems to overcome the computationally intense clustering process. Results show some near linear speed up in higher threshold clustering applications, meeting the requirements to classify, group and process large document sets within nonprohibitive execution times. Includes graphs and charts. (JAK)

Larson, Ray R. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1992
Presents the results of research into the automatic selection of Library of Congress Classification numbers based on the titles and subject headings in MARC records from a test database at the University of California at Berkeley Library School library. Classification clustering and matching techniques are described. (44 references) (LRW)
