Listening to Whispered Voices and Heart Melodies
Smith, Andrea
Language Arts, v83 n5 p422-426 May 2006
In this article, the author talks about her teaching approach which is from a transactional/ constructivist perspective, embracing both the work of Dewey and Vygotsky. She believes that learning is imbedded in social interaction as part of a sociocultural process that begins at birth. Learning does not occur in isolation, but within a network of interactions in which individuals affect one another and experiences build upon each other. Here, she discusses the Dream Flag project and describes her student's participation in the project and their month-long exploration of Langston Hughes. She also talks about the poems that her students created, reflecting their dreams for themselves, their families, and their world. (Contains 2 figures.)
