What Works Clearinghouse Rating

Cooper, William S.; And Others – Library Quarterly, 1975
Estimates are given for the extent of the overlap of the monograph holdings of the Los Angeles and Berkeley campuses with the holdings of other southern and northern campuses. Estimates of the historic usage rates of the overlapped portions of the collections are also given. (Author/PF)

Buckland, Michael K. – Library Quarterly, 1972
The variable" loan and duplication policy which was developed is described and also the considerable impact of implementation. The work is presented as a case study in library O.R. The great importance of analyzing the structure of problems is stressed and the nature and usefulness of models is described. (9 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: College Libraries, Library Circulation, Library Materials, Library Services

Goldhor, Herbert – Library Quarterly, 1981
Reports on a study in the public libraries of Champaign and Urbana, Illinois, to determine whether public library circulation of a sample of books will be greater for those volumes displayed in a prime location than for those in their regular places on the shelves. (FM)

Cooper, Michael D. – Library Quarterly, 1991
Updates a storage cost model for academic library collections by examining how changes in construction costs and circulation costs affect the choices of an alternative book storage strategy. Results show that the most economical alternative for a large range of construction and circulation cost alternatives is to convert existing ground space to…

Baker, S. L. – Library Quarterly, 1986
Based on a doctoral dissertation, this paper describes a study of why displays of books increase use. Two hypotheses were tested using standard pretest-posttest experimental designs at two small Illinois public libraries. Increased accessibility and visibility were found to be causes, while narrowing the browser's choice was not. (Author/EM)

Ottensmann, John R.; And Others – Library Quarterly, 1995
This study found the patterns of circulation in various categories of adult books to be similar across the branches of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library. In only some subject categories, branch circulation levels were related to socioeconomic characteristics. (AEF)

Goldhor, Herbert – Library Quarterly, 1972
It was hypothesized that adults borrow books from the public library primarily as a result of browsing and that what facilitates browsing will significantly increase circulation. This report is on a study of the effects on public library circulation of putting a group of adult titles in a prime physical location. (15 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Adults, Library Circulation, Public Libraries, Reading Material Selection

Bookstein, Abraham – Library Quarterly, 1981
Proposes a model of library output as an abstract quantity, and relates it to other components of library performance. The consequences of basing library funding on such measurable outputs as circulation are also examined in light of the proposed model. A 13-item reference list and four figures are provided. (JL)
Descriptors: Economic Research, Financial Support, Libraries, Library Circulation

Morse, Philip M. – Library Quarterly, 1972
Mathematical models of library operations are presented which describe the amount of use made of resources by a user in a visit, the distribution of book circulation in a collection, the dependence of circulation on time, and the effect of multiple copies on user satisfaction. (9 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Evaluation Methods, Library Circulation, Library Collections, Library Services

Morse, Philip M.; Chen, Ching-Chih – Library Quarterly, 1975
Shows how simple probability theory can serve to remove the bias from a sample so that estimates of total yearly circulation and circulation distribution can be calculated from circulation desk data. (Author/PF)
Descriptors: Data Collection, Library Circulation, Library Research, Probability

Bruce, Daniel R. – Library Quarterly, 1975
Gives a model to interrelate the measures of service used in a library. (Author/PF)
