Jesson, David; Kurley, Frank – Mathematics Teaching, 1975
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Calculators, Computation, Educational Media
Willson, William Wynne – Mathematics Teaching, 1978
Repeatedly taking the square root with a calculator yields numbers with logarithmic-type properties, which can be used to define the logarithm functions. (MP)
Descriptors: Calculators, College Mathematics, Computation, Instruction
Girling, Michael – Mathematics Teaching, 1977
The author redefines basic numeracy as the ability to use a four-function calculator sensibly. He then defines "sensibly" and considers the place of algorithms in the scheme of mathematical calculations. (MN)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Basic Skills, Calculators, Computation
Sturgess, David – Mathematics Teaching, 1978
A possible solution is discussed to the problem of what mathematics to teach low achievers. The three main aspects are very basic mathematics, calculators, and confidence. (MP)

Johnson, David C. – Mathematics Teaching, 1978
Four categories of abuses are discussed: calculations, games and puzzles; mystical button pushing; and checking answers. Useful activities are illustrated for the categories of calculations, patterns, exploration, applications, and new content. (MP)

Ethelberg-Laursen, J. – Mathematics Teaching, 1978
The use of calculators in mathematics classes of eight-year-olds was investigated. Results showed that the experimental classes were quicker and more accurate in addition, subtraction, and multiplication than the control classes at the end of the year. (MN)

Coward, P. H. – Mathematics Teaching, 1978
An attitude survey and arithmetic tests were given to samples of students in order to quantify the benefit obtained from their use of calculators. Results showed that the use of the calculators does improve students' arithmetic performance with the less able students showing about twice the improvement of the more able. (MN)
