Surprise and Inspiration
Watson, Anne; Mason, John
Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, n200 p4-5 Jan 2007
The authors see mathematics as an endless source of surprise, which excites and motivates them. Many writers have exploited this characteristic of the subject to nurture learning. The challenge is to create conditions for learners so that they too will experience a surprise. The authors tend to see surprise as a positive emotion; mathematics as full of philosophical and cognitive surprises; and surprise as motivating curiosity and effort. They have collected and developed tasks which seem to generate discussion about how surprise can be created, generated, nurtured and harnessed during mathematics teaching and learning. This article offers some of them. (Contains 1 figure and 1 note.)
