Michael T. Kalkbrenner – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2024
The purpose of this instructional piece was to provide a nontechnical synthesis of common internal consistency reliability estimates used in professional counseling and in related fields. The article begins with an overview of coefficients alpha, omega, omega hierarchical, and H, with guidelines for their selection. Next, I provide recommendations…

Erin Johnson; Samantha Barstack; Yikai Xu; Hannah Wise; Bradley T. Erford; Catharina Chang; David Delmonico – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2025
Problem Statement: Among individuals aged 12 years or older, 14.3% (40.0 million) reporting the use of an illicit drug in the previous year. Given the prevalence of drug abuse, it is increasingly important to determine effective screening practices, treatment procedures, and best practices among various subpopulations to identify drug use-related…

Richard S. Balkin; Quentin Hunter; Bradley T. Erford – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2024
We describe best practices in reporting reliability estimates in counseling research with consideration to precision, generalization, and diverse populations. We provide a historical context to reporting reliability estimates, the limitations of past practices, and new methods to address reliability generalization. We highlight best practices…

Monica L. Coleman; Moira Ragan; Tahani Dari – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2024
Intercoder reliability can increase trustworthiness, accuracy, rigor, collaboration, and power sharing in qualitative research. Though not every qualitative design can utilize intercoder reliability, this article highlights how positivist qualitative research, community-based participatory research, and participatory evaluation all strengthen when…

Ryan M. Cook; Stefanie A. Wind – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2024
The purpose of this article is to discuss reliability and precision through the lens of a modern measurement approach, item response theory (IRT). Reliability evidence in the field of counseling is primarily generated using Classical Test Theory (CTT) approaches, although recent studies in the field of counseling have shown the benefits of using…

Sojeong Nam; Byeolbee Um; Jeongwoon Jeong; Monique Rodriguez; David Lardier – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2024
This study aimed to provide meta-analytic reliability information of the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). We implemented systematic search procedures to 35 eligible studies (N = 23,247; Mage = 26.74 years) that reported reliability estimates. The synthesized average values of Cronbach's alpha were 0.88 (95% CI [0.85, 0.92]) for the…

Kalkbrenner, Michael T.; Ryan, Aimee F.; Hunt, Adam J.; Rahman, Samiah R. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2023
We conducted a psychometric synthesis of the internal consistency reliability and internal structure of scores on the English versions of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) in publications between 2012 and 2022. Results supported acceptable-to-strong reliability and validity evidence of scores…

Kimong, Patricia J.; Erford, Bradley T.; DeCino, Daniel A. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2023
We reviewed 19 English version scholarly works and 11 other language translation articles from 2004-2018 for the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale -- Revised (CESD-R). Alpha was 0.92 (0.90, 0.94; N = 13,150); convergent, factorial, and diagnostic validity were robust. Implications for counseling practice and research were discussed.

Lambie, Glenn W.; Mullen, Patrick R.; Swank, Jacqueline M.; Blount, Ashley – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2018
Supervisors evaluated counselors-in-training at multiple points during their practicum experience using the Counseling Competencies Scale (CCS; N = 1,070). The CCS evaluations were randomly split to conduct exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, resulting in a 2-factor model (61.5% of the variance explained).

Dailey, Stephanie F.; Robertson, Linda A.; Gill, Carman S. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2015
This article describes a follow-up analysis of the Spiritual Competency Scale, which initially validated ASERVIC's (Association for Spiritual, Ethical and Religious Values in Counseling) spiritual competencies. The study examined whether the factor structure of the Spiritual Competency Scale would be supported by participants (i.e., ASERVIC…

Hays, Danica G.; Wood, Chris – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2017
We present considerations for validity when a population outside of a normed sample is assessed and those data are interpreted. Using a career group counseling example exploring life satisfaction changes as evidenced by the Quality of Life Inventory (Frisch, 1994), we showcase qualitative and quantitative approaches to explore how normative data…

Lee, Ahram; Park, Eun Hye; Byeon, Eunji; Lee, Sang Min – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2016
This study describes the development and psychometric properties of the Counseling Supervisor's Behavior Questionnaire, designed to assess the specific behaviors of supervisors, which can be observed by supervisees during supervision sessions. Factor structure, construct and concurrent validity, and internal consistency reliability of the…

Raykov, Tenko – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2009
This article outlines a readily and widely applicable procedure of reliability evaluation for scales with unidimensional measures. The method is developed within the framework of the popular latent variable modeling methodology, and it accomplishes point, as well as interval, estimation of measuring instrument reliability. The approach can be…

Pistole, M. Carole; Roberts, Amber – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2011
This study investigated aspects of construct validity for the scores of a new long-distance romantic relationship measure. A single-factor structure of the long-distance romantic relationship index emerged, with convergent and discriminant evidence of external validity, high internal consistency reliability, and applied utility of the scores.…

Evaluation of Weighted Scale Reliability and Criterion Validity: A Latent Variable Modeling Approach
Raykov, Tenko – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2007
A method is outlined for evaluating the reliability and criterion validity of weighted scales based on sets of unidimensional measures. The approach is developed within the framework of latent variable modeling methodology and is useful for point and interval estimation of these measurement quality coefficients in counseling and education…
