Eber, Herbert W. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1977
The best strategy for personality scale construction may be a utilitarian concept rather than a psychometric one. Some specific suggestions are given. (Author/JKS)

ten Berge, Jos M. F.; Knol, Dirk L. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1985
Constructing scales on the basis of components analysis by assigning weights 1 to variables with high positive loadings on the components and -1 to variables with high negative loadings was compared with other strategies of scale construction, which assign weights 1 or -1 to variables with high weights for the components. (Author/BW)

Paunonen, Sampo V. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1987
Study determines that solutions derived by multiple group analysis and item-total correlation analysis were generally most interpretable from a psychological perspective. It was concluded that their application to test construction is preferred over Procrustean or confirmatory maximum likelihood approaches. (RB)

Marshall, Nancy J. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1974
The development of the Privacy Preference Scale is described. Six subscales were constructed from a principal axis factor analysis. The ability of the subscales to differentiate between age and sex groups, and their relationship to personality measures and to self-reported privacy oriented behavior are presented. (Author/RC)
Descriptors: Adults, Age Differences, Factor Analysis, Personality Measures

Revelle, William – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
Hierarchical cluster analysis is shown to be an effective method for forming scales from sets of items. Comparisons with factor analytic techniques suggest that hierarchical analysis is superior in some respects for scale construction. (Author/JKS)

Porges, Stephen W.; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1985
The Illinois Classroom Assessment Profile is a teacher rating scale that is sensitive to behavior disorders exhibited by hyperactive children. The behavioral dimensions represent sustained attention, impulsivity, conduct, fine motor coordination, and evaluative anxiety. The development of the scale and investigations of its factor structure are…

Benson, Jeri; Bandalos, Deborah L. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
Factor structure of the Reactions to Tests (RTT) scale measuring test anxiety was studied by testing a series of confirmatory factor models including a second-order structure with 636 college students. Results support a shorter 20-item RTT but also raise questions about the cross-validation of covariance models. (SLD)
