This chapter highlights the factors that hinder or contribute to the success of Latino and Latina students at predominantly White institutions. The Culturally Engaging Campus Environments (CECE) Model is offered as a framework from which to create environments for Latino/a students to thrive in college.

The concept of student-institution fit in higher education and conceptual foundation on which it is based is clarified. The concept of fit is linked to enrollment management by a model for operationalizing the conceptual and theoretical construct such that levels of fit can be more effectively managed. (Author/MLW)

Attrition is defined and the importance of understanding factors affecting it at a particular institution are discussed. A retention model is presented, ways that each of the sets of variables affect attrition and methods to reduce attrition are discussed. (MLW)
