Organizing for Sustainability
Brown, William M.; Hamburger, Michael W.
New Directions for Student Services, n137 p83-96 Spr 2012
A successful campus sustainability effort catalyzes broad engagement of the campus community and integration of sustainability principles into the academic and operational components of campus life. Although many universities have embraced sustainability as a new core value, others have been more sluggish in adopting sustainability principles to guide campus operation. In this chapter, the authors share their experience at a large, public university in developing a successful, growing campus sustainability initiative, and offer general insights into the challenges, opportunities, and practical issues involved in creating and implementing a viable institutional program in sustainability. In the first section, they examine some of the institutional challenges to sustainability movements and the benefits of institutional commitment to sustainability. They then examine some of the specific elements of success in implementing a new sustainability program on campus, including issues of governance, finance, and management of a campus office of sustainability, and key approaches to engaging campus stakeholders in sustainability efforts. Finally, they examine the long-term goals of campus sustainability programs and the prospects for development of stable, self-supporting academic and organizational programs that remain viable through changing institutional administrations.
