School Staffing Ratios, 1977-78. ERS Report
Anne Gavin; Paul J. Porwoll; William Edmisten
Online Submission
Although staffing patterns heavily influence both the quality of education and the school budget, school officials and others have not had current data by which to compare staffing patterns in their school system with those in systems of similar enrollment size and expenditure level. To help fill this void, Educational Research Service developed this report from information collected as part of the annual ERS National Survey of Salaries and Wages in Public Schools in 1977-78, which provides this information for 22 professional and 10 support positions. Data in the report were provided by 1,159 responding school systems. Pupil-staff and teacher-staff ratios are included for individual positions and aggregate categories of professional staff. Data are presented separately in 44 tables for four levels of school systems (large, medium, small, and very small) and five levels of expenditure per pupil. Also provided is a detailed, system-by-system listing of the number of staff members and number of pupils and teachers per staff member for 1977-78 for all 1,159 responding school systems. Users are cautioned of the limitations of the data and their proper use.
