Online Submission, M.A. Thesis, Moore College of Art & Design
"Exploring Best Practices in Trauma-Informed Teaching and Therapeutic Approaches in Art Education" will address how applying trauma-informed teaching and therapeutic approaches within the art classroom will help students form positive behaviors and coping mechanisms to deal with trauma. Multiple art educators from varying backgrounds and individuals with therapy certifications will be interviewed and observed using a qualitative research approach to identify the most effective practices within high schools regional to Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This study spans 14 weeks primarily online via video chat or phone calls, but also utilizes in person communication for observations and interviews allowed by participants. Only adults and educators were interviewed. No students were interviewed or interacted with, but their interactions with the educator during the classroom observations were documented. All participants and individuals observed during the study are kept anonymous, except for organizations and information that is already available to the public. Data was collected through interviews and observations. Information and evidence of using these practices was revealed throughout the duration of this research study.
