Performance Improvement, v50 n3 p5-8 Mar 2011
Efforts to improve human and organizational performance are often courageous adventures full of unexpected twists and turns and frequently leading to unexpected destinations. From mentoring and succession planning to e-learning and beyond, the activities that can be leveraged to improve performance are vast. Comparing, contrasting, selecting, and implementing systems can change misadventures into valuable sojourns through coordinating combinations of improvement activities. Rather than reinventing the wheel, in their "Handbook of Improving Performance in the Workplace, Vol. 2: Selecting and Implementing Performance Interventions" (2010), the authors create a sensible framework that organizes how to select among useful performance systems and implement them within core business processes. The "Handbook" identifies and integrates guidance from 48 practitioners and scholars from around the world on how over 30 performance solutions can best be applied. This commentary summarizes those approaches and provides a glimpse into how each can contribute to an integrated framework for performance. (Contains 1 figure.)
