Robinson, Ian; Robinson, Saul; Robinson, Nathan – Physics Education, 2020
Described here is a well established opensource geophysics project to monitor atmospheric infrasound 24/7. It employs a modern digital, I[superscript 2]C enabled differential pressure sensor--unlike the older analog devices more commonly used. Python software automatically uploads plots whilst data is stored in standard ".mseed" format…

Robinson, Ian – Physics Education, 2018
Described is an established geophysics project to construct a solar wind monitor based on a nT resolution fluxgate magnetometer. Low-cost and appropriate from school to university level it incorporates elements of astrophysics, geophysics, electronics, programming, computer networking and signal processing. The system monitors the earth's field in…

Kodama, K. – Physics Education, 2009
We describe a simple experiment demonstrating the variation in magnitude of a magnetic field with distance. The method described requires only an ordinary magnetic compass and a permanent magnet. The proposed graphical analysis illustrates a unique method for deducing a general rule of magnetostatics. (Contains 1 table and 6 figures.)
Descriptors: Physics, Science Instruction, Science Experiments, Scientific Concepts

Cook, A. H. – Physics Education, 1980
Discussed is the earth's gravity and its geological significance. Variations of gravity around the earth can be produced by a great variety of possible distributions of density within the earth. Topics discussed include isostasy, local structures, geological exploration, change of gravity in time, and gravity on the moon and planets. (DS)
Descriptors: Earth Science, Geology, Geophysics, Higher Education

Garnish, J. D. – Physics Education, 1978
Discusses the prospects and potential of geothermal utilization, paying special attention to its exploitation in the United Kingdom. (GA)
Descriptors: Earth Science, Energy, Geophysics, Heat

Smyth, A. J. M. – Physics Education, 1970
Presents a research project for secondary school students in the fields of archaeophysics (archaeology) and geophysics using gamma spectroscopy. Describes investigations in mineralization and in dating of potsherds. (LS)
Descriptors: Geophysics, Instruction, Laboratory Procedures, Physics

Sullivan, R. A. L.; Hopkins, J. C. – Physics Education, 1979
Describes a simple application of the seismic refraction method, using a two layer system, and extending it to a three layer system. (GA)
Descriptors: College Science, Earth Science, Electric Circuits, Geology

Isenberg, C.; And Others – Physics Education, 1983
Basic concepts associated with seismic wave propagation through the earth and the location of seismic events were explained in part 1 (appeared in January 1983 issue). This part focuses on the construction of a student seismometer for detecting earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions anywhere on the earth's surface. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Geology, Geophysics, Higher Education

Smith, Peter J. – Physics Education, 1980
Discussed is the physicists' impact on the revolution in the earth sciences particularly involving the overthrow of the fixist notions in geology. Topics discussed include the mobile earth, the route to plate tectonics, radiometric dating, the earth's magnetic field, ocean floor spreading plate boundaries, infiltration of physics into geology and…

Barnes, Francis; And Others – Physics Education, 1980
Discusses three research topics which are concerned with eminently practical problems and deal at the same time with fundamental fluid dynamical problems. These research topics come from the general areas of chemical and biological engineering, geophysics, and pure mathematics. (HM)
