The physiological literature exhibits a variety of diagrammatic conventions to represent cause-and-effect relationships (organismal maps). One scheme, based on mathematical studies of physiological systems, is described. The scheme involves the use of solid and dotted arrows, the former representing stimulation, the latter inhibition.
