Pursuing Peace: Enlisting Students in the Battle against Bias
Bradley, Elizabeth H.
Principal Leadership, v8 n1 p30-34 Sep 2007
The Lewiston School System has increased staffing to handle the language acquisition needs of its burgeoning number of English language learners, but the Lewiston High School community looked outside the school system for help in dealing with the sociocultural issues that inevitably arise when different cultures come together. The school turned to the Center for Prevention of Hate Violence, a locally based, but internationally recognized nonprofit organization, for guidance. The center, under the leadership of its founder and director Stephen Wessler, "develops and implements training and educational programs to assist businesses, non-profit organizations, schools, colleges, law enforcement agencies and other institutions to prevent bias, harassment and violence" (Wessler, n.d.). Under the umbrella of the Unity Project, the center developed the Student Leadership Project (SLP) and Controversial Dialogue (CD) subprograms. The underlying philosophy of these programs is that students are the best allies in working toward a peaceful, bias-free school. Details about these programs are presented.
