Establishing an Adjunct Faculty Professional Development Program for Delaware Technical Community College
Mergner, Leslie A.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University, Delaware
Higher education is experiencing unprecedented change due to economic and demographic projections, largely focusing on the usage of adjunct faculty. No longer will community colleges be able to rely solely on full-time faculty to ensure that students persist to graduation. This executive position paper provides a proposed plan for a formalized adjunct faculty development program that will improve instruction and positively impact student success at Delaware Technical Community College. Findings from this qualitative study indicated that all adjunct faculty want to be successful and that implementing an adjunct professional development program may address the challenges faced by adjunct faculty while offering continuous learning opportunities for personal and professional growth. With the creation of a professional development program for adjunct faculty that is aligned Delaware Technical Community College's mission and vision and with support and encouragement from administration, adjunct faculty may now be fully engaged in the concept of student success. This plan presents a vision for adjunct faculty integration into the college's culture and the overview of a 3-year plan that can be implemented collegewide.
