The purpose of the current study was to determine if there was congruence between college students' perceptions of their current academic advisor's advising style and their preferred advisor's academic advising style; examine if the relationship between current and preferred advisor's academic advising styles predicted a student's level of satisfaction with advising; discern if there was a difference between the satisfaction of college students whose perceived and preferred style of advising matched or did not match; and determine if there was a relationship between college students' preferred academic advising style and demographic characteristics. The current study utilized the Academic Advising Inventory in a descriptive, non-experimental survey design. The results found a difference among the total DPA scale, and PE, ADM, and SC subscales between students' perceptions of their current advisor's academic advising style and their preferred academic advising style. The difference between current and preferred academic advising styles was a significant predictor of a student's level of satisfaction with advising, and results showed there was a significant difference in satisfaction between students whose perceived and preferred style of advising matched or did not match. Significant relationships were discovered between college students' preferred academic advising style and age, ethnicity, and academic classification, while there was not a significant relationship between college students' preferred academic advising style and gender, academic major, and commuting status.
