The Perceptions of Autism Spectrum Disorder Students and Their Parents: Implications for Principal Decision Making Regarding School Inclusivity
Meskell, Kathrin Ann
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Mercer University
Autism is a complex biobgical disorder that usually lasts throughout a person's life (CDC, 2015). Persons with autism often find themselves cut off from the world around them. People with autism may exhibit a broad and diverse range of characteristics so doctors now think of autism as a spectrum disorder. Research studies reported that principals lack the necessary training skills, and confidence to evaluate and support teachers who instructed children classified with autism in inclusive settings (Patterson, Marshall, & Bowling, 2000; Praisner, 2003; Reynolds, 2008). This study explored the perspective and experiences of the parents of ASD students and their perceptions of school culture. The purpose of this narrative study was to describe the perceptions of school inclusivity for ASD students and parents of ASD students. The research confirmed that there is a need for improvement in providing an inclusive school culture through communication and collaboration. The stories were coded and analyzed to find common themes using critical incidents. The five themes found in this study were academic inclusion, social inclusion, teacher support, communication, and collaboration. School principals need appropriate training and experience to implement an inclusive school environment for all students.
